why would they do that? it makes no sense, Xbox 360 supports xbox games and Wii supports gamecube. wouldn't making a PS3 that did not support PS2 be a bad move to people who do still like playing old games?

lol the current 80gb have software support for ps2 games as well....not JUST the metal gear solid package......

the 60GB has hardware support but costs like $600+ on ebay etc since they don't sell it anywhere.

Backwards compatability is an important factor to those of us that still play our large colections of PS2 titles from time to time. Saves having to drag out the PS2 or cluttering the living room with an extra console. No idea why Sony is waffling on this issue now.

I've had my ps3 since launch day. Never had any problems.

Bought a 360 12/07 had to send to Microsoft twice since i got it. Ended up selling it on craigslist.

PS2 compatibility:
(1st gen) 20GB & 60GB -> hardware
some (first batch) 80GB -> software emulated

Though, All PS3 can play all PS1 games.

Yes, and thats part of the reason the PS3 is still at a steady 3rd against a console with near-100% failure rate and a cheap graphically-inferior console with roughly 3 good games.

This is not correct... the current 80 GB does NOT have any support for PS2 games. The current 80 gb PS3 on the market today is like the old 40gb with a bigger hard drive. No PS3 currently in production today is compatible with PS2 games or SACDs.
