Dell EPP: Studio XPS Desktop Intel Core i7 Quad Core 2.66 GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, 256MB Radeon HD3650, DVDRW, 23" Full HD LCD, Vista Premium x64 $959 Or $922
Ok, there are 2 parts of the deal, one from Dell Home, one from Dell EPP. Dell EPP part is not active yet, but Dell Home is.

(forget about dell home, EPP is live)

Dell Home deal, and details are available right now via this link

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&oc=DXDNZY1

Price is $999 - 3% with DPA = $969.03 shipped + taxes, tags, title, insurance... oh wait, wrong place

Dell EPP deal will not start till later today (11/17/2008), likely closer to 6-8AM central time, and the link will be

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=eep&cs=2236&oc=DXDNZY1 <-- LINK IS ACTIVE!

    Price will be also $999 - 7% EPP discount - 4% DPA = $891.91

    Start here
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=eep&cs=2236&oc=DXDNZY1

    Choose options
Dell 23 inch Consumer™ S2309W Flat Panel, Adjustable Stand [ Free!]

Note, the free monitor upgrade will likely be gone by morning, I am guessing it's an error - but we'll see. In any case, upgrade to a 24" is only $50 if you want it. If you can get 23" for free, I see no reason to upgrade to 24"

Checkout, apply DPA, yada yada, your total is $969.03 + whatever taxes your state collects. In the morning, this should be $892.91 with Dell EPP after all discounts

Here is what this money gets you right now
    • Intel® Core™i7-920 Processor(8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
    • Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
    • 1Yr Ltd HW WRTY, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis, 24x7 Phone Support
    • 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs
    • 500GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
    • Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
    • Dell 23 inch Consumer™ S2309W Flat Panel, Adjustable Stand
    • 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450
    • Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
    • Dell USB Consumer Multimedia Keyboard
    • Dell Laser Mouse
    • Integrated 10/1000 Ethernet
This is brand new Intel quad-core Nehalem based CPU, which has 4 physical Cores, with 2 threads per core ("virtual" 8-core CPU). It uses Socket 1366.

Chances are, this uses Intel X58 chipset. Just to give you an example, here is what Newegg has to offer motherboard wise ($220 and up)

The CPU itself retails for $320ish right now.

You decide if it's worth it, but if you want new tech, this won't be easy to beat right now.

    Wow! nice package

How am I gonna drive the price lower tomorrow if I place the ordr now (considering the risk of losing the free upgrade to 23" monitor)? just curious: where did you get the link:
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dell...oc=DXDNZY1

Even if the upgrade will not be free, it should be $50 or so, I would guess. You can't drive it lower, since you can not place an order at EPP right now.

12 days is normal lead time for dell actually, as well as most desktop manufacturers for CTO systems.

Not a bad deal really. Even some non-integrated video, even if it is low end. No price gouging like I expected.

Me too, given that i7 is still considered to be a enthusiast level processor.
I wonder when Dell is releasing its Inspiron range of desktops with i7s, given the state of the economy !

Any chance of the board having multiple x16 slots? X58 supports both SLI and Crossfire... but they probably only have 1 x16 slot on their crappy boards.

    Ddr3

So now we're breaking into the i7, QPI, DDR3 era.

Just a quick question; I thought triple-channel RAM was supposed to come in groupings of three.... so what's the deal with:
    • 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs

Maybe I'm just missing something here...

they brought back hyperthreading so there are 4 cores and 8 threads. The only way you will use this processor fully is if the software uses at least 5 threads. Kind of like the C2D being quicker that the C2Q in some instances. Not everything knows how to use that much power. Pretty cool though... feel bad for all the people who just spend $1200 on the C2Q Extreme.

    Blahman, [2] PCI-E x16 on Intel's board and I'm sure EVGA has 2 or 3 PCI-E x16...excuse me...PCI-E 2.0...MSI probably has 1 PCI-E x16 because they're MSI

triple channel RAM has nothing to do with the RAM itself. The Board is CHANNEL A B C. Some boards have 4 DIMMs some have 6 DIMMs. Selling RAM in packs of 3 makes it ?convenient? Boards can support 16GB under 64-bit OS . I'm not sure how the 3+1 works...ie channel A B C and the left-over is assigned to what, user specification? DDR3 prices [as well as timings] needs to fall like LCDs prices are...please.

Everyone knows it's stupid and a waste of money to buy the highest end Intel processors unless you have some professional need for it. If they spent $1200, they got what they deserved.

It doesn't have to be installed in threes. You just won't get (currently minimal) triple channel benefits, that's all.

Or to use 8 single-threaded applications with affinity set to single HT thread.
