    CVS Coupon Guide
The CVS coupon landscape has changed somewhat since I started CVSing a year ago, especially with the advent of the 13-digit CVS coupon and the issues associated with that. I thought it would be a good idea to hash out all the details of how the different CVS coupons work by garnering everyone's experience and coming to a consensus, not only for CVS newbies, but also for seasoned CVSers just tuning back in.

I have placed in the wiki everything I remember about CVS coupons from what people have reported or from my own experience. Here are some guidelines for updating the wiki:

-If you have new information, and others can confirm it
-If you have more updated or correct information, and others can confirm it
-If you want to change my wording or info presentation for more clarity and understandability
-If you want to add commonly-known info I simply missed noting

I'm just starting this thread to get the ball rolling. Everyone, please help out! I know there are experienced CVSers out there who can test and confirm some of this information at their customer-friendly stores.

I can already see a need for the following info in the wiki:
-what about CVS home mailer q's?
-what about CVS %off Friends & Family q?
-confirmation for anything I bracketed with question marks
-for more clarity, individual posts with examples/exceptions; then link to the examples from that specific wiki info

Once we have a consensus, our moderator can decide where best to put this, whether to leave as is, or to merge it into the CVS FAQ thread. Having this information confirmed and located in one place for all to reference will benefit us all.

    Happy CVSing!

Current known problems with particular CVS q's (updated 2/9/09)

    $10/$50 CRT
-when scanned first, causes all subsequent CRT's to beep; no issues if used last- reported by MistyQ

    CVS Coupon Guide

    13-digit CVS q's
-expire promptly on expiration date given; some have reported being able to use it 1 day expired, but no later than that

-limit all q's/ecbs scanned after it to the amount of that 13-digit q
-to prevent, use 13-digit q last
-to prevent, use all q's/ecbs valued greater than the 13-digit q BEFORE it is scanned
-to prevent, only use q's/ecbs valued less than the 13-digit q AFTER it is scanned
-to resolve, have cashier rescan your EC Card after the 13-digit q before proceding with other q's/ecbs
-one-time use only: once scanned, that particular 13-digit q can never be used again, even if you void the order & start afresh; on the 2nd attempt, register will say already redeemed on mm-dd-yyy
-$/$$ limited to one purchased-based coupon per transaction

12-digit CVS q's found in-store or in newspapers, magazines, and other publications
-expire 15 days from expiration date given
-limited to one coupon of the same barcode per transaction

12-digit CVS $/$$ q's emailed periodically (usually near holidays & quarterly rewards)
-always beep as "not valid for card scanned" if you did not directly receive the email
-often beep anyway even if you did directly receive the email
-sometimes work without beeps if you directly received the email
-AND, in some areas, this 12-digit q is one-time use only, as reported by the following users:
    shotcaller88 -West Palm Beach, FL
    xIncognito -Northern VA
    hb5of10 -Houston, TX
    jamama -Northern NJ
-expire 15 days from expiration date given
-limited to one coupon of the same barcode per transaction in certain areas; one-time use only in other areas as already noted
-limited to one purchased-based coupon per transaction

    12-digit CVS product-specific q's emailed
-work without beeps even if you did not directly receive the email
-expire 15 days from expiration date given
-limited to one coupon of the same barcode per transaction

9-digit CVS q's from register receipt
-work only on EC Card for which they were issued
-expire promptly on expiration date given, and in some cases, at the exact hour/minute issued
-limited to one coupon of the same first 5 digits (of the 9-digit code) per transaction
-if used in a transaction that is then voided (so you get CRT back), next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.
-if expired & beeps "expired" and you get it back, next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.

9-digit CVS daily recurring q's from price checker/coupon printer
-examples: $2/$10 CVS Brand, $1/2 Gold Emblem Candy, $2 Gold Emblem Water 6pk or larger
-work only on EC Card for which they were issued
-CVS Brand $/$$ expire 30 days from expiration date given or expire when a new CVS Brand $/$$ code (as defined by the first 5 digits) begins issuing, whichever occurs first
-CVS Brand product-specific q's expire at least 21 days from expiration date given or expire when a new code (as defined by the first 5 digits) for the same product type begins issuing, whichever occurs first
-limited to one coupon of the same first 5 digits (of the 9-digit code) per transaction
-if used in a transaction that is then voided (so you get CRT back), next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.
-if expired & beeps "expired" and you get it back, next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.

    9-digit CVS $/$$ or product-specific q's from price checker/coupon printer
    -examples: $5/$25, $1 Almay, $4/$20 Playskool, $2 Colgate Toothpaste
-work only on EC Card for which they were issued
-expire promptly on expiration date given
-limited to one coupon of the same first 5 digits (of the 9-digit code) per transaction
-if used in a transaction that is then voided (so you get CRT back), next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.
-if expired & beeps "expired" and you get it back, next time you use it will beep "not valid for card scanned" even though it is for the right EC card.

    Notes:
-actual CVS q's begin with 4
-9-digit CVS q's from your receipt or the price checker/coupon printer are called CRT's
-using expired CVS q's is YMMV, even if they work without beeps; some stores take them, some don't
-exceptions may occur due to store-specific programming of their registers
-exceptions may occur due to glitches in the system, especially on Wednesdays, but usually revert back by the following day
-exceptions may occur due to cashier error

Wow. You did an excellent job, nearsighted. Thank you! This was a great idea.. I don't have a lot to contribute, as I just started CVS'ing hardcore - so I am still a newbie..

The 5 digit codes where they mention, "Cashier, please enter: XXXXX" is considered a 12 digit code. If you look closely on those 12 digit codes, the first 5 numbers are exactly the same as the 5 digit code they mentioned for cashier to enter in

I live in MD and often use multiple 4 off 20 coupons in one day. I am not sure why there is a MD restriction in the wiki, but I have CVSed all over MD and never had that problem.

The $10/50s that printed from the scanner caused all the other CRTs to beep, so it should be used last - if the cashier will take it last. I tried having the cashier scan my card a second time, but it made no difference. Other CRTs still beeped.

A few days later I went back to the same CVS with another $10/50 and a more coupons friendly cashier told me she needed to use it last because of all the problems it causes. She used it at the end when my total was now way below $50 but above $10, and it scanned just fine - so it does work if the amount is less than $50.

Another vote for no MD restriction of mutiple uses of $4 off of $20. But I think there was a recent register upgrade that won't allow stacking. Yesterday I tried using a 4/20 and a 3/15 on the same transaction, the total was over $35 and my store allows me to do this, but the 3/15 beeped. My Jedi showed me the screen where it stated that a $ off of $$ had already been used, then she just overrode and gave me $3 off anyways. Gotta love those Jedis

To clarify, according to the different types of CVS q's listed out in the wiki, which type of CVS q's were the 4/20 & 3/15 you used?

Thank you for reporting! Maybe a new restriction is starting where once a purchase-based q is used, no other CVS q's may be combined with it... I have heard 1 or 2 reports that rescanning the card did not work; it may have been this kind of situation. We'll keep an eye on this one and see how it tests out.

I'm sorry I can't change CVS's rules for you, but I sure am happy you were able to use the CVS Coupon Guide to answer your question today! And that you understood that line correctly! I had thought my wording there rather awkward and cumbersome but couldn't figure out how else to put it.

4/20 was a 12 digit, got from the iheartcvs site. 3/15 was a 13 digit, I think the ones they hand out at the pharmacy, I got from Ebay. I never had a problem using multiple $/$$ before, when it beeped the cashier said something about a register update, and she showed me the screen. It said something to the effect that a 4/20 had already been used for the order and it did not allow any more $/$$. HTH

Just in case it matters: my coupon order was the 4/20 first, 5 or 6 others including ECB's, then $5/2 duracell and the 3/15 last.

The CRT's from the scanner such as the GE nuts, towel paper, do not have an expiration date of 30 days. its much shorter than that.
