E is usually reserved for the CPP website.
P is usually used for the regular website.

$653 before taxes if you remove Integrated Mobile Broadband, but you probably want to at least upgrade the RAM and HD unless you want to do it yourself later on.

Upgrade RAM and hard drive yourself. Cripes, 4GB is $40 and a 500GB HD is approaching $100.

I missed the deal earlier in December on the X61 for like $560 or something.

Still looking for X61 or hopefully X200 at a great price

Check what you need for ports - the IdeaPads have been more consumer-oriented and havd more multimedia input/outputs, wecams, etc. If the ThinkPad meets your needs in that department, I would go with a ThinkPad any day of the week. Built like tanks. Once you get used to the Trackpoint, a Trackpad will seem primitive. (Even a Mac's multitouch).

Upgrading it yourself is definitely much cheaper, but won't replacing the HD void the warranty? I'm not sure what Lenovo's policy is.

Is there any way on the website to upgrade the IdeaPads? It seems like they only come in certain configurations and your are stuck with options installed. It would be nice to upgrade the battery to 9cell and get a fingerprint reader.

Depends on what your requirements are.

replacing the hard drive can't void the warranty with Lenovo *except* for the hard drive warranty (since they didn't supply it), but they still have to warranty the rest of the system.

i use a somewhat simple rule for these. if you use your laptop as a portable computer (i.e. you carry it with you all the time, it's gonna get banged and dropped, etc.), then go with the thinkpad. as someone else mentioned, they really are built like tanks.

if you will mostly use your computer at home, with an occasional outing a few times per year, you're better off with an ideapad, which gives you consumer-friendly features for a lower price...

Remember, the ThinkPads use DDR3 ram which is quite a bit more expensive than the DDR2 ram used by most other manufacturers.
