The bank will probably go belly up within a year in this economy. I would say bank with big names and save yourself the hassle. That said, this would be a good deal. However, 1099 = a sizable tax

Everyone knows that FDIC is a standard procedure. I am talking about the paperwork/mental agony you may have to go through

If this bank was to fold, FDIC gets a cousin bank to swallow it and voila! You may be down for a few days but no paperwork whatsoever. Of course, this will only last for so long, until the FDIC begins to sputter from way to many salvage jobs and then we're all overtaken with mucho mental agony....go get your Touch and enjoy while you still can.

Hmm.. I would do this but my work doesn't do direct deposit. "Government checks" - is that any official bank issued check or does this need to be some government issued thing. Also what are taxes on this going to be like? Leonidas says "a sizable tax" - any idea how much roughly?

1099= regular income, only difference is you pay both portions of medicare and social security tax (approx 15%) as compared to a normal paycheck where your employer would pay half of those.

Its not a 1099-misc its a 1099-int. The $250 is reported as taxable intrest. So you end up paying tax on $250 based on your tax bracket. Presuming you itemize and you are really worried about the tax liability you can always go to goodwill and donate $250 of old items. Be sure to get a receipt!
