Read the rules too. You have to buy a car that gets better miles than the one you have. The more miles the more your old car is worth. Say, 5mpg more, $4,500 but you can also get rebates & stuff.

I would support this if those who wrote the law was actually smart..

In order for this to be a good program, it needs to..

    1. Put a additional $1.70 federal tax per gallon sold, and use the money generated to offset the cash for clunker

    2. The voucher is given to the customer as a tax writeoff, when the car plates is turned into the DMV and written proof provided by a authorized junkyard NOT dealers.. This way dealers have no idea if the customer coming has any vouchers..

Letting dealers and car companies into this, is like throwing fishes to sharks..

You might check to see if you have been driving with the parking brake on if you are getting less than 18MPG in your Metro.

I agree that the Yaris is cruddy, but VW has major reliability issues. The Corolla is among my top choices for an econo-car

So, would this tax credit be refundable?
Heh, I have an old minivan that gets 17MPG according to the EPA...though I routinely get 19 in city and up to 24 on the highway.

I have 3 cars: A 2006 PT Cruiser, a 2000 Chevrolet Metro, and a 1992 Dodge Caravan. If I was to take advantage of this bill, I could use the Caravan for my $4500 voucher, sell my highly desirable 1.0L 3 Cyl 5-Speed Metro Coupe (has A/C), and the PT Cruiser.

This $3500/$4500 is not a tax credit. It is a voucher not unlike those digital converter boxes...but you only get one when you trade in your clunker and get a car that obtains X or Y fuel economy (3500 or 4500 bucks).

    Let's see...

Since Obama has taken office, the government now owns the banks, the mortgage lenders, Wall Street, the auto industry, and soon the health care industry. Is anyone detecting a trend yet? Perhaps Castro and Chavez were correct when they said they would soon be "to the right" (politically) of Obama.

This program is analogous to the "gun buy back" programs that fail miserably. Basically you're taking hard-earned tax dollars from the contributing members of society and giving them out to many people who are gaming the system (including criminals). Yet another socialist program gone wrong. This one is destined to fail, as well.
Sorry to burst your partisan blinkers.... But BUSH was the one who pushed these programs through... Obama cannot rescind what Bush had authorized and signed into law...

Your right the gas tax should be raised for energy independence and to fund additional roads. The legislation provides for the vehicles to be taken either by dealers or by the recyclers(i.e. Junkyards). You can take the qualifying vehicle to the recycler directly and get a voucher that can be used at the dealer after you have your best deal worked out. The legislation prohibits dealers from reducing rebates or other discounts when a voucher is used. The dealer get $50 for handling the trade in, but nothing for storage. I believe the dealer will also get something from the recycler for the vehicle.

This sounds good at first UNTIL you realize that every car getting turned in WILL NOT be resold, but junked. What happened to renew, reuse, recycle?
Only the engine and trans are scrapped. Everything else will pieced out and sold and the metal from the engine and trans will be melted and resold as well.

Quote from Hardwyre View Post :
I'd bet a dollar worth of donuts that there are already droves of people out there buying and registering junk cars in expectation of this to pass. Then they'll simply sit on those pieces of shit for a year and turn in a dozen piles on the tax payer's tab. fark it, I might go do it. If we're just going to throw money down the toilet, might as well try and catch some before it's all flushed.
There's a cutoff. You can't do what you're describing but if you want to buy an old guzzler to help the economy, go for it!

AFAIK, you'd have to buy 2 new cars.

Agreed. And the average working slug. The way of thinking doesn't surprise me though.

OP--this may boost Ford and import sales but car buyers are very confused right now on Chrysler, GM. Looks like very few cars will qualify for this program.
