Can I install Windows XP on an HP 8000

Hi,

Okay so I'm not an expert in this field, but I bought an HP 8000 desktop with an AMD Phenom X4 9650 Quad-Core processor (2.3GHz), 8 gigs ram, and the hated Vista OS. Can I install XP or XP Pro on this computer? Thanks for any assistance.

Yes but you'll lose the use of the extra ram you have unless you get 64 bit. Make sure you make recovery disks and test them before you change OS. I'm not a big fan of vista, but why do you want to change? Are you having issues? If so there might be other resolutions to your problem. Including moving up to Win7

I strongly suggest against XP 64 due because so many people have driver problems with it.
Why not try Windows 7 x64? Its free for a year

Or, actually try using Vista for a few weeks and see if it's as bad as you think (hint: it isn't).

You have plenty of ram for vista to perform well, otherwise Windows 7 is a good choice.

I'm going to echo everyone else and say Windows 7 is probably the best way to go.

If you still want to go with Windows XP, you will have to slipstream your SATA drivers into the disk (or use a floppy). This can be done with a program called nLite (free).

Right now, Vista is the best way to go. The laptop has all the drivers already installed, or at least available online or on a CD. Drivers for OEM computers for XP and Windows 7 are iffy, at best.

I think people need to get off this notion that Vista is somehow some beast of burden and actually use it for more than 10 minutes.

Yea. Windows 7 RTM is the way to go. But since that isn't out for at least a few months, stick with vista. Maybe try to use it instead of reading articles.

As I mentioned before, it all depends on the availability of drivers. A co-worker of mine has an HP laptop that came with Vista and he couldn't find all of the drivers for XP on his laptop.

I kept telling him that he just stick with Vista but he would hear none of it, because he was steadfast against using it. In the end, purchasing XP, getting it to work (about 80-90% working, at least) and whatnot was more of a pain in the ass than just using Vista.

Any person that "hates" vista with a quad core processor and 8GB of memory has never used it and is just going by what everyone else is saying.

People always forget how much of a mess XP was when it was released... XP wasn't stable till Sp2 (which vista just hit).. and still is FAR less secure than VISTA (well ok far less secure than Vista with UAC enabled is a better comparison).

But seriously i remember people badmouthing XP saying... I want 2000... I want 98 (noone ever wanted Windows Me). People blacked out the memories of Sasser and Blaster viruses from their mind it seems.

Vista is Finally a mature O/S in my mind (but Windows 7 builds on those good points and makes em better)

I'd say SP1, but even then, the point still holds true. If XP were a cheese, it'd be swiss, because there are far too many holes in security. Securing XP machines was terribly difficult and it could easily fall to its knees with little effort.
