When will these 1.5 GB Seagate drives go away? They should come with a free helmet and an airbag.

This model has the newer firmware according to a Micro Center tech who really knows his stuff. It also comes w/a Discwizard, sata cable, and a sata power adapter. The discwizard is great. It enables you to "copy your old hard disk and migrate all data, operating systems and programs to your new drive automically."
I just bought this at Micro Center 2 weeks ago for $129 + tax But in for one more as a external back up

It's really complicated: You call seagate and get a firmware update if required (based on the serial number). For your reference, I've been using 10 of them heavily for over a year. My first problem with them happened recently when one drive smoked; par for the course. Stuck another one in and everything is working fine again. RMAing it through seagate. Was it BS that they released a broken product and jumped up and down insisting there was no problem? Sure. But it's fixed now. By this line of reasoning, I might as well ask "When is Intel going to release a CPU that can divide properly????" |

I just had to RMA this 1.5gb Seagate drive that died after only a few months. It already had the "fixed" firmware when I got it, but still died a quick death.

Apparently the cause of the brickings was a one-in-a-trillion firmware bug that would cause the drive to stop functioning if the drive powered down at SMART event 250. That's it. It also only happened on a set of drives that were tested with a specific piece of hardware that they'd recently purchased that failed to catch the problem. As such, the newer drives or drives that have had their firmware updated will not brick in this manner. This is also why they recommended not using these drives in a RAID setup in response to the problems people were having; this increased the chance of a random power down at this event. Hardware failure for these drives has been no higher than any other drive line in recent history, internet bravado not withstanding. I have used a number of these drives in a mission critical setting. I had one brick due to being in a RAID 5 and powering down at 250; I'd feel confident buying many more now that the issue has been resolved. The problem was described in greater detail to me, but that's the gist of it. Seriously, this was a fluke problem that no one could have expected. If you've talked with someone who writes things like firmwares and BIOS updates, every once in a blue moon something completely wacky will happen with no cause to be found, and simply re-writing or compiling the same code will fix it. In short, don't be scared of buying this drive if it suits your needs. |

I'm curious. Is there anyone here that has these drives (and hasn't had any bad experience with them) who is using them as an OS drive? The people I've encountered who had good experiences with these things are using them as secondary mass storage. The one person I know who is using it as an OS drive is experiencing frequent freezing and locking during gaming. And yes, everyone has their firmware updated. It's standard issue now with these drives.
