How do thinkpads compare to other laptops, like this acer one:

    http://forums.slickdeals.net/show...&t=1430611

the thinkpad only has 1 GB ram vs. 3GB for the acer, the graphics card is better on the acer, HD is 160GB vs 320 GB, and acer laptop has a built in webcam. Also acer laptop is 50 bucks cheaper.

So I was just wondering what the pros are for a thinkpad because I've heard that thinkpads are good.

IMO amd mobile cpu's fail in comparison with intel mobile cpu's. In battery life and performance my old t2050(1.6ghz dual core) compared to my friends 2.1 turion x2, the intel battery last longer and was slightly faster.

The build quality on Thinkpads are legendary. Even though some people might say it dropped a little when Lenovo took over officially, the fact is that they're still top-notch in terms of durability. Thinkpads were originally made for the traveling business class, where you could easily spill on or drop your laptop in transit.

The latest SL series lacks several of the otherwise common key features of a ThinkPad, such as the Roll Cage or the ThinkLight. However, I have one and I'm not necessarily disappointed with it. Haha. I've been heavily using it in place of a desktop for about a month now and it's had no problems. A lot of the preinstalled Thinkvantage programs from Lenovo are quite useful, save for a few. Other than that, although I'm disappointed that it's not at the same level as other Thinkpads, I'm pretty satisfied with it in general. Plus it still has the accelerometer built in so you have active hard drive protection when you drop it :p.

Oh, plus, even if you opt for the integrated GPU versus the discrete one, it's still the the 4500MHD which is definitely HD capable, but not too good in the games department.

processor good for price but what's with the 1GB ram? otherwise it's comparable to the $500 Lenovo Y550 that was FP'ed two weeks ago and as lucidfighter said, prob with better build quality. i'm happy with the Y550 though.

Understand that these are not real ThinkPads. They sort of look like one (though not really, with the glossy lid) but they don't have lot of the features common to other ThinkPads

    No magnesium case
    No bottom roll cage
    No Think Vantage
    No top roll cage
    No Steel hinges
    No ThinkLight
    No lid latches
    No Ultrabay

and the BIOS identifies the laptop as an IdeaPad, not a ThinkPad.
This last part isn't going to be an issue for most people, but it's proved a real headache for those trying to run Linux. Other ThinkPad models are made to be Linux-friendly.

Error on post. I don't believe the WSXGA+ screens are LED backlit. Not a bad deal, but I'll wait for something slightly better.

Don't be mislead, an SL series "Thinkpad" is on par with mainstream Dell Inspiron and HP Pavilion laptops. You're going to have to spent extra for the DVD writer, and to upgrade the memory.

If you're going to purchase this, I recommend seeking a good deal on 2 x 2GB PC2 5300 DDR2 memory modules, paying $15 for the upgraded DVD+-RW drive, and paying the extra $35 for the 160GB 7200rpm hard drive. (often overlooked, significant performance increase, especially with Vista's constant hard disk paging)

QFT - Took the words right out of my mouth. You can pickup a 1 GB stick to upgrade the memory to 2 GB, plenty for a mainstream lap top, with Windows 7, for $10 at almost any etailer. Fully agree with the drive comment, it makes a big difference in your day to day experience with a system.

Would def. get the upgrad to Win 7 as well. Big difference in performance between Vista and Win 7.
