Build a Cheap Hackintosh - MOBO/CPU/VIDEO for $124 shipped! Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L and Pentium E5200 Dual-Core RETAIL combo ($106 FS), PNY 8500GT Video Card ($17.99 AR/Bing)
Here's the deals I found for some OSX/Hackintosh-compatible hardware:
1) MOTHERBOARD - Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L Retail Motherboard (retail comes with SATA and IDE cables, etc): mwave.com [mwave.com]
2) PROCESSOR - Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 Retail (retail comes with heatsink): On the motherboard page above, add the CPU COMBO above ADD TO CART and select this processor.
The total will be $116. Shipping is FREE when you buy this motherboard/cpu combo. Use coupon code: "BK2SCHOOL" for another $10 off. New Total $106. (Alternatively, you can get this at newegg.com for $122 minus BING cash back.. but this is cheaper and you don't have to wait for bing).
3) VIDEO CARD - PNY 8500GT OEM 512MB DDR2 from Newegg: newegg.com [newegg.com]
Video card is $17.99 after rebate and bing cash back, free shipping.
$124 is your total for your OSX-compatible MOBO/CPU/VIDEO.
Here are my notes:
a) With Hackintoshes, OSX only works with certain motherboards and video cards. This motherboard is SUPER compatible (if you read the newegg reviews, there's people who specifically cite Hackintosh. Also, google will show you guides people have created for this SPECIFIC board to install OSX. Even the on-board sound works right out of the box for OSX!
b) The processor is retail and comes with a heatstink. No need to buy another.
c) The processor is a great overclocker. To easily overclock to 3.0ghz (12.5 multiplier, 240mhz bus speed, stock voltage. write this down.. ) Most people are getting 3.5ghz on aftermarket coolers.
d) Again, the video card selected is only one of a few lines of video cards that will work with OSX.
e) I have only posted the deals for the OSX-specific hardware. You will need memory, a case, power supply, input devices (keyboard, mouse), monitor, hard drive, optical drive, operating system, etc. I will not post deals for those, but I can quickly reference some: Newegg is having a sale on the 1TB Hitachi SATA drives, and also the $25 Rosewill cases. Take a look on the slickdeals forum for those.
Hackintoshes require quite a bit of research, but narrowing down the hardware was the biggest challenge I had (since only few specific parts have been tried and are compatible).
Good luck and feel free to use this post for discussion of Hackintosh.
Edit: some additional notes:
For this build, you're going to want to google "es2l hackintosh guide."
You should be able to use any of the "other" install discs, but a retail leopard (aka "vanilla") install will work too. the guides can show you what drivers to install.
I'm pretty sure most of the nVidia GT 7XXX, 8XXXX, and 9XXX video cards work. You will definitely want to google "your video card + hackintosh" to see what comes up, and see if anyone has a successful build with your video card.
EDIT: Sold out on MWave.com. Pick this up at MicroCenter for the same price (+tax or shipping). Thanks to pseudoswede for posting this!
