This can and should be used by you to post updated deal information.
Be sure to read this because it may contain answers to your questions!
This deal ended January 5, 2010. UNLESS you are a UCLA student. In which case you can still get the Pro upgrade in the UCLA store for $30
I am cleaning this up, again, people keep the wiki informative, but to the point!! Reply w/ a post if you want to inject your opinion.
This thing was all garbled up AGAIN.....NEWBS, STOP EDITING IT!

PLEASE UPDATE TITLE: AS OF 12/24/09 WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL FULL VERSION IS NOW AVAILABLE!.

PEOPLE PLEASE READ THIS WIKI! MANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED HERE.

If you are currently a student you maybe eligible to purchase any version of Windows 7 through your school's computer shop/bookstore for $18. Some students are also eligible for MSDNAA (i.e. free copy) access check with your IT department.
Click here to see if your school is enrolled in MSDNAA [microsoft.com]

There are THREE ways to obtain this software.....

------1) Obtain the software through this Digital River Promotion for $30 which gets you a DOWNLOADABLE version (+$13 for mailed DVD which is currently on Back Order)
note: mailed DVD is a complete waste of money if you know how to burn an iso image to a DVD.
    or
---------2) Call Microsoft's Store directly at 1.877.696.7786 option 2, then 2 which gets you a mailed Full version DVD for $29.99 + Shipping (Free Shipping Promotion Currently!) + local tax
. Sometimes they tell you to go to http://www.win741.com to order but if you are persistent enough, the full version IS available. note: full or upgrade version makes no difference, both can be used for a clean install
---------3) Check out your Campus Store. At least at UCLA they sell the DVD upgrade for $29.99 +Tax to students (short form filled out - ID required). Don't have to wait to pick up and free DVD. (Was able to buy online copy and store copy)

AS OF 12/24/09 WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL FULL VERSION IS NOW AVAILABLE..
    Update 1/18/10:
To those that have had trouble installing the update version on a new or formatted hard drive try to install without the product key (leave it blank) and uncheck automatically activate. This will allow you to install in the 30 day trial mode. Once it's installed and online enter your product key to activate. This worked for me installing 64bit on a blank hard drive. For more options see: http://www.mydigitallife.info/200...ard-drive/

    Update 12/13/09:
You MUST be a student to take advantage of this offer. This is proved by means of a valid .edu email address. There are certain schools that do not have a .edu domain, but have registered properly with digital river and Microsoft. The details of this is covered on the deal's website. You may also call Microsoft at the above number if you're not sure about your school's email.

Credit to msuhcpcrew - Some people are getting mixed results calling in and ordering from Microsoft in regards to getting a full or upgrade version. The full version DVD is available so be persistent or call back and get a rep who knows what they are talking about. The CR will ask you if you have a .edu email address and then take down you billing and shipping address. Your edu email and addresses do not need to be related in anyway. Shipping options are as follows : $5 3-7 days, $10 2nd day, $16 next day. Confirmation and tracking email will be sent to the edu email address.

The following is taken from Digital River's FAQ page:

How to track the shipment if you did not get your verification E-mail.
    Go to http://www.ups.com/WebTracking/re...svl=SubNav
Enter the Order ID number that the Microsoft sales representative should have given you with your order into the "Shipment Reference" field.
Ensure your order date was within the specified date range.
At the bottom of the page specify your "Destination Country."
Enter your shipping zip code in the "Destination Postal/ZIP Code:" field.
Now press the track button on the bottom of the page. This should give you your shipping information if the order has been shipped through UPS.

based on typical windows policy, for example, vista home premium --> 7 premium, vista ultimate --> 7 ultimate, etc.

and no these people are not spammers.

went into the "upgrade advisor" to make sure you could upgrade from XP too, and they suggest you get a new computer or, if you really want to upgrade from XP, you should get some help from a pro, because clean installs obviously need to be done by a pro

    sweet deal tho

I just googled digitalriver and there were a few news articles... I hope it's legit, cause it doesn't appear to be an upgrade so much as a full version. Hopefully it works. This will be my transition chance ($30 is great for a Windows OS, since I'm not an engineering student )
