I doubt that is true for GC deals like this, but more for GCs given at Xmas and what not. Usually the value of those cards is not enough to buy anything good by itself in the first place (I dunno about you but I rarely get a card over $25 as a gift), but great for getting a video game or something half off.
This deal seems like one where slickdealers and those in the know will buy all the units and then hoard the cards for groceries or sell them or whatever.

No, you can't, and not really. You need the casing for the hard drive, and even then, it only recognizes specific drives. You can store disc images on the HDD to improve playability, but it still performs a disc check when you start the game.

Maybe it's some mail in offer that is limited to one per household- they have to limit it somehow or else someone will just grab the bunch and have a friend keep going back in line one at a time to flip it, right?

i dont see why not? unless they are putting a limit on it.. if not there will be other that are buying the F$$$ out of this that way so why not us take advantage the same way. dont get why people get all bent out of shape when people talk about things like this. theres always someone everywhere looking to make a buck so if you can why the hell not. its the stores own fault for putting out a deal like this when clearly they know that people will do it. just my 2 cents.
