I still can't stomach how Pioneer took away the 7.1 preouts and lopped 10 pounds off this thing when compared to last years 1018. I can't help but think the amp took a serious hit with a 10 lb. difference.
My VSX-919 holds its' own well with my Elite VSX-01TXH. You "weight" guys that don't own the 919/1019 are just parrots repeating what you read somewhere. When you actually own one, people might actually take your advice, otherwise not whole lot of credibility going on.

    Good price BTW!

Maybe you should read the specs on Pio's website to see how the speakers are powered/routed by the amp. I own the 23 which is 18lbs. more than the 1019. So your reply is specious at best. This may only be an issue for those whose speakers can accept higher wattage. I have 4 speakers that are 500 watt per capable and 4 that are 250 watts per. The 1018 will drive that load much better than the 1019. Period.

Still I would have considered the less expensive 1019 had it still retained the pre-outs. But none of these AVR's are going to drive my speakers w/o amps (which I already own) and therefore need the pre-outs.

Just about any audio enthusiast worth his salt will agree, you want to set aside the lions share of your budget to good speakers. Or at least, as you herad down the upgrade path, good speakers should be your first stop.
that said, it doesn't make sense for some to limit yourself on the front end with an amp that can't drive those better speakers or doesn't have the capacity to connect a separate amp which can drive them. JUS' SAYIN'.

That was in response to another poster who thought I did not know that the Elite had the pre-outs. It was also in response to you when you stated I had to own one to be qualified to comment on the difference. As if that makes any F'ING sense. Nobody can comment on the quality of anything, or the differences between one model from another ON ANY F'ING PRODUCT UNLESS THEY FIRST OWN IT.

Dude, you are an F'ing genius.

    In reply to Otakulad:
This unit and other "Receivers" have integrated pre-amp and power amplifier circuits (they are in the same box). Preouts (or pre-amplifier outputs) provide a low level output from the pre-amplifier section for use by external power amplifiers, bypassing the power amplifier cicuits in the receiver. If you have one or more power amps, you can use the supposedly better amplifier circuits in the external power amplifier instead of the internal amplifier circuit in the Pioneer or whatever. Combination pre-amps and power amps in one box are generally considered to be inferior to separate pre- and power amps.

Having an external power amplifier is one step up from an integrated amplifier (having both pre-amp and power amp in the same box). In general, unless you are going to spend some serious money on speakers and power amplifiers, you probably won't hear the difference between a good integrated amp and moderately priced separates.
