    3 mags: 49.97 club price: 44.97
    5 mags: 69.97 club price: 62.97

The military has specifications for the whole unit. to my knowledge, they they have only created specs for 20 and 30 round magazines, and the beta c drum. The military awards contracts for magazine production to manufactures and holds them to that spec (idea is consistency no matter who the source is). Milspec mags (lets forget the drum, we aren't discussing it) are always aluminum, built with certain dimensions and with certain coatings, etc.

The term "military spec" is being used for marketing only. They are likely have a matching dimension on the mag catch, or feed lips or ???

That's not a bad thing, just calling a spade a spade. For instance, the military considers mags to be expendable ... most of us civilians don't

OK, I like to compete in 3gun competitions (shoot pistols, rifles and shotguns in a "tactical" scenario, scores are a combination of time to shoot vs accuracy. 40 round mags are considered "essential gear" as you don't have to reload for many scenarios if you are using one. Also, the mags need to be ~100% reliable, you don't want to have to clear a jam/misfeed in a timed stage!
Here's the old way most competitors get reliable 40 round mags:
Sterling mags (older production, I think for the English military, no longer made). These go for ~$100, sometimes more ... USED They were aluminum too.
Custom makers, joined 2 mags together, cost was always ~$100
Steel 40 rounders .... No one knows who manufactures these (that should tell you something). You can get them from several gun places ... this find is one of them. To get them reliable enough for competition you'd buy several, test them for function, most are usually pretty good. Take the best, sell the rest. Then, replace the follower with a "anti tilt follower" (there are many now, military ones are green) and replace the spring (one of the weakest components in these generic mags).

I went this route, spent ~20 ea for 5 mags (needed 3), I had extra followers, and the springs (ISMI brand) cost like ~10 each.

That was the old days ... as of a year or so ago a couple of other options have arisen. PMags are made of hi tech plastic and are all the rage (for good reason) and there's a company (specializing in competition equipment) that cuts makes a pmag extension (to get to 40 rounds). It's proven VERY reliable. CMMG (see cmmginc) has produced a 42 round mag of HIGH quality for $30.

Bottom line. If you don't need ultra reliablility, or longevity in a mag, these are a VERY good price. i.e. occasional plinking/blasting target shooting sessions.
They are a bit long for shooting from a bench, but actually competitors use them to support the rifle when going prone
Be aware that some states limit rifle mag capacities. No gun savvy store will ship these to those states, but you can get in trouble by transporting these into those states.

    And shooting is fun!

    Agreed,
These are probably great for plinking or loading a few extras rounds. For your home defense or SHTF weapon I would not recommend these for the simple reliability issue that could arise.

Those who like to read about this stuff, AR15.com has a whole section devoted to mags.

Nothing wrong with magpuls or cproducts. Personally, I think reliability flows from quality springs (over time, not initially), proper feed lips ... but most importantly the follower. The modern followers are a TON better than old, and follower replacement can "tune up" mags that are starting to go south.

There are a LOT of new offerrings out there, from companies that disclose themselves and stand behind their product. Thx to above poster, I realized that C products is making a 40 round mag ... C products is a good company who will stand by their stuff. Pmag is hard to beat for std capacity mags (they are polymer mags ... but have video out there of mag abuse that you wouldn't believe ... and the mags still work!

As said above, the 40 round mag is pretty cool for fun/range factor. Military might like them as well (but they would likely just skip to the 100 round beta). For "serious applications" (home defence for us civies) there's NOTHING wrong with a 20 round mag!!! lower profile = less to snag or bump. 30 round mags are the norm, and are just as good (unless shooting from a bench. Of course, if the country has crumbled and we are reliving red dawn my opinion would change

OK, I took my own advice and went to the AR15 mag section. They have a FAQ tacked up top that is VERY informative.
