This doesn't look like it supports the CAN bus, which a LOT of newer cars use.
    These do support CAN.

The hacker in me wonders if you can fill the memory with fake data...

I also want to hack to fool the tester but I also fool my own wallet. The car's emission is tied to its performance, efficiency. When cars don't run efficiently, the lower gas mileage is the effect.
If my car's mileage is 20mpg, I drive 15000 miles a year, 30000 miles in 2 years until the next smog check, when the gas mileage is 1mpg less, I will waste 79 gallons of gas or $237 at $3/gallon.
$237 is almost the price of a 60GB Xbox!!!

If you want a cheap and rough version of this go to harbor freight. Don't look like this one will tell you what the codes mean. you have to do the same thing with the one from HF. Harbor Freight [harborfreight.com] Sometimes they're on sale or you could use a 20% off coupon.

What software did you use with your netbook to record that data? I have a Honda, does it work with these cars too? Thanks
I'm using PCMScan and ProScan software. You can find the torrent for them if you look around, and there are lots of different OBD II applications available to try..

The scan tool takes a little time to configure (I use it with Windows XP and I know it works with Windows 7, can't say for Vista), but once you get it working good it's a great tool. I use the dyno functions the most now though. It's interesting to see the difference car mods make on performance. It calculates HP and torque by rpm, speed, weight, distance traveled and you have to have someone sitting in the passenger seat to record the data (if you don't want to wreck looking at the laptop and flooring your car at the same time!) , so it's not completely accurate but close enough.

However, I will say that you can't be a complete novice with computers to get this to work right.

This is the scan tool I have:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ca...veQ5fTools

Yes, it works with Hondas. The only cars I've noticed it gives a little more trouble with is Nissan and Infinitis because the scanner timesout after a little bit, but still works to retrieve codes. I've tested this out on Ford, Pontiac, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Infiniti, VW, Chrysler, Chevy, Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. Mostly newer- between 2000 and 2007

Just FYI, this isn't nearly as accurate as getting a real dyno reading. The outputs from the car computer are not nearly fast or accurate enough to give trustworthy data.. there's a huge range of error from using those data points.

I'm sure you know this, but for everyone else.. it's still a great starting point. And you can do basic comparisons for mods. I've got the ScanGauge 2 from LinearLogic in my car.

Yeah, it isn't nearly accurate, but it's close enough for me to fool around with...instead of having to spend $$$ on putting the car on a dyno for small mods. Definitely primitive compared to a real machine, but still very fun to use.

I have the dynolicious software on my iTouch that calculates HP/TQ and other figures through the accelerometer and it's pretty accurate too as long as you get the weight and parameters as close as possible. Very sweet. If you guys haven't tried it out, do so because it's worth the money.

Looks like this deal is dead. Now it is $170, more than the 9150. Amazon does play games with prices. Does anyone know if this one is any good? Not many good reviews on it.
    http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiS...&sr =8-11
Looks like it does all the Actron 9180 does but it's $100 bucks. Also looks just like the Harbor freight $139 scanner with a different name.
