I'd recommend against any Sony or HP laptop - they do not have a good reputation for building quality machines.

Go with Dell, Lenovo, Acer or Toshiba. You can find some great deals in the Dell Outlet [dell.com]

Thanks for your input. I am able to get a laptop through work and I think I have one Dell as an option. I will try to find the specs to that one also so we can compare them.

I found more info on the Sony this morning.

I have a Sony Vaio FW (16.4" Widescreen, 2.55GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, 320 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive, Blu-Ray Drive, 1GB Graphics Card)

I think it is a great laptop and has met all of my expectations so far.

I never thought I would buy a Sony Vaio bc they were way over priced, but they are now pretty competitive for what they offer.

I would never buy a Dell. Just personal preference.

I would value that laptop at about $700-800 right now, comparing it to the recent 500 off hp 16" laptops

I have had HP laptop for 3 years. Overall, it is ok. I almost replaced every hardware of the laptop once because of one or the other issue, but since that was in warranty, i din't have to pay for it. But it is very inconvenient to stay without a laptop when it is sent for repair. Also, dell has some heavy laptops, if portability is a preference, except Dell XPS, which is awesome. Sony, I havn't used them, but I just love the design of the laptops. I am looking for a laptop too and am probably going to buy either a CW or SR series. They are too good, especially the white color. They are pretty competitive in price too. The above congiguration you are looking for is very good, but do check out for promotions before you buy. A few promotions in Sony I know of are:
1. $150 off 2 years service warranty
2. mouse and case free with some laptops
3. free blu ray playback upgrade (u already have it in the config)
4. EPP discount (there is a thread in slick deals for that)
5. If you are a student, there is student discount too. Search the web for "sony deals" and you will find plenty of links.

Good luck !

Hi, Bought my daughter a Sony Vaio couple years ago and it died I took it to a local repair shop and they told they don;t work on Sony's. Said too complicated, buy a Dell or Acer. It was an expensive laptop and was out of warranty. Went to Sony's website and explained problem. Sent laptop to San Diego service center and was repaired in 2 weeks at a cost of $150. Sony followed up by making sure everything was right. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. Remember Sony "The one and only"

Any computer repair shop that says a machine is "too complicated" is not worth visiting.

Vaio's seem to be over priced, at least the ones I've seen. Agree with the Dell comments, but I think HP computers are just fine.

my sis bought a Vaio during the Compusa liquidation sale and it recently died (1.75 years worth), wasn't worth fixing, so will be purchasing another computer. the Dell that she had in the past was able to stay intact for about 7 years before she upgraded to a Thinkpad.

my parents had a Dell laptop that got fried and only lasted for about 3.5 years. their replacement was an hp laptop.

Sony is a nice computer but usually over priced a bit. HP is also a nice computer, that is if you stay with the Pavilion line and not the Compaq line.

Asus is REALLY climbing up in quality and has got my attention this year.

Acer, Gateway, eMachines and Packard Bell are all in together now and if I had to select one of them....Acer would be the one.

As far as Dell goes......I picked up a Dell Netbook last weekend at Sams Club and I'm pretty savvy when it comes to basic computer knowledge but there was one very simple question i had about the Networking with the Netbook so I called Dell right? hahaha

Mind you this was ONE day after I bought this Netbook and their response to my ONE little question was that if I wanted a years worth of questions answered, I could pay them a couple of hundred dollars for that and if I wanted them to answer just this ONE question only ONE day after I purchased it that they would have to charge me something in the ballpark of $70!!!!!! I started laughing and gasping for air and told them that I had a very strong feeling that I was going to just end up returning the Netbook and not worry about it and guess what happen then!?!? They slammed the phone down in my ear!!!!! For Real! I was so shocked.
I honestly don't think I would ever consider a Dell ever again with that type of response over ONE question only ONE day after I purchased it. lol

Were you asking Dell an OS question? I don't know that ANY of those comapnies include OS support - only hardware support.
