This is not a bad deal considering this is the only TiVo model to have a clock on the front. (OLED).

You can buy the lifetime for $399 on any TiVo unit.

There was a time when Tivo wasn't offering the lifetime choice on it's Series 3 units. But now, as mentioned above you can add lifetime to any Tivo unit, new or refurbished.

Tempting though. But for only $24 more I could order the new Premiere with lifetime rather than a refurb S3 with lifetime. I imagine prices will continue to fall and one day it might be hard to pass up.

I don't understand why people use TiVO anymore - Can someone explain to me the appeal? With Dish, Direct, or any number of Cable companies, they will lease you their's for free with a nominal monthly fee (I believe we pay $7/month for ours).

So you pay $175 for a refurbed unit then another $299-$399 for the lifetime subscription - Is that correct? So at $7/month you are better off using Satellite or Cable DVR until around years 7-9 - then TiVO makes sense - Is TiVo even going to be around that long? From a functionality standpoint, having used almost all DVR types, my preference is by far DishNetwork - so again, maybe it's ignorance, but how does TiVO make sense?

My FIOS DVR is $15.99 and it sucks.

You have to have used one to understand how much better it is than DVRs supplied by the cable company. It's just a much better product/device. My wife and kids love it... and my wife has very little patience for gadgets - it's just that good and intuitive to use.

IMO, I'd rather have a TiVoHD than a series 3. TiVoHD is more forgiving if you want to upgrade the HD yourself. I upgraded one of my TiVoHD units to a 1TB HD.

The upcoming Series4 TiVo looks underwhelming... I was hoping it would allow you to stream to other devices (like a slingbox) and/or allow you to decode various file formats for your TV (like my popcorn hour). Honestly, I don't see a lot of value in upgrading to their newer product. /shrug

I don't use TiVo, but I will not pay for TV, so there are only a few options for me. I have set up a HTPC that records broadcast television. If I were not too technically savvy I would probably use a TiVo, especially with all the media center features included.

I've upgraded both my series 3, and two TivoHD units. Both were easy. Google WinMFS.

If you're not paying for tv, are you only getting channels 2-13? Just curious because I recently hooked up our rabbit ears to see what we get.

The appeal is...I won't pay for cable. I use my rooftop antenna to pull in hi- def reception. I put a lifetime subscriptions on my two tivos...and I'm done. No monthly bills.
