"If you're using XP, you will need to do some additional work to make this drive perform correctly. This line of Western Digital drives is the first using their new "Advanced Format," which changes the sector size from 512B to 4KB. The more modern operating systems work fine with this, but Windows XP will not align the sectors correctly.

Western Digital has two options to fix this for XP users. You can either put a jumper on pins 7-8 before installing the drive, but this only works if you're using it as a single partition for a clean install. Otherwise, use the WD Align utility. Western Digital has spelled out the steps quite nicely. Visit their site and search for "advanced format," and you should have all the information you need to proceed appropriately."

Just wanted to confirm. This HD is running at a lower RPM, correct? I assume it is 5400 rpm as opposed to the 7200? What would be best in terms of using a HD like this one (or not) for the primary HD? I am trying to build a new system, but deciding which HD would be best: a higher RPM with lower cache (i.e., 7200 rpm & 32mb cache) versus a lower RPM with higher cache (5400 rpm & 64mb cache, such as this HD). Anyone know?

I vowed never to spend more than $50 for a hdd, but I'm tempted. Still, I think I'll hold out until 1TB hits $50. Hopefully, that's around the corner (perhaps a Staples offer + coupon?).

Not a good idea to use this as a primary drive. It is 5400 RPM. The extra cache helps, yes, but it still performs slower than your average 7200 RPM 16MB cache SATA HDD.
