    Windows Server 2008 - Free for Students from Microsoft
    Microsoft has updated their "DreamSpark" offerings. If you don't know, DreamSpark is Microsoft's area for giving free software to students. Previously, DreamSpark offered Windows Server 2003 for free. However, they have recently updated that to offer Windows Server 2008.

    Server 2008 is slightly newer than Vista and would be acceptable as a server (obviously) or as a lighter weight gaming/ desktop platform than Vista. By default, a lot of the bloat that was in Vista is disabled by default in Server 2008. However, if you want, Server 2008 can basically be transformed into full featured Vista. So if want to install legit Windows on another machine, give this a look.

    All you have to do is confirm you're a student, DreamSpark also offers other free software like Visual Studio 2008 Professional and SQL Server 2008.

    The ISO download from DreamSpark is for 32-bit only. However, if you want the 64-bit version. Download the trial [microsoft.com] from Microsoft. Install the 64-bit version without a serial. Once installed, use the serial provided by DreamSpark to activate.

    I've been using Server2008 x64 on my lone "client" desktop, NOT as a server, since RC3 in January. Note that Vista and Server2008 are both really "Windows 6." They just have a few different apps included, and some install off/on by default depending on the target customers. Almost all drivers and apps I use for Server2008 x64 are Vista x64 drivers and apps. Server 2008 is a bit faster and more stable than Vista, because most of the pretty-stuff and additional toys/gadgets are off by default. An example is you must turn on the sound after you install Server2008, it's not on by default. Another example is IE is blocked from 'Net access, you must turn off the security block. Also, to use "Windows Media Player" you must turn it on through a features panel. Give me Server2008 x64 over ANY other OS, thank you!
