    Good find, thanks

    Good Find, Repped.

I graduated in 1997 and used my old U of Washington ID. Even though I am taking some additional classes at the local community college.

Barely keeping up reading the thread, new page every 5 minutes (set at 30/page).

BTW, it only took about 20 minutes to download using HTTP.

I change hardware often too, so does it require activation?
My guess is that any student license will require one but it will be best if someone could confirm.
I go to a community college but we do have 4 yr degrees and College participates in MSDNAA. I get to download bunch of MS soft for free including the server versions, the only catch is that you need to call for a new activation if you reinstall.

    How about for Mac?

I've been waiting to find XP cheap to run on my Mac. Can I run Server 08 through the bootcamp app? The main reason I need windows is to run some software. Will this work?

Can I set it up with Exchange 2008 with this?

I want to set up a email server for my home PC and having a hard time with it.
Yes... but chances are very good that your broadband provider will not allow you to use port 25 for smtp thereby effectively cutting your exchange server off from the internet (as far as mail transport goes).

Any particular reason why you want to set up your own mail server at home? There could be alternatives.

There's no reason for it not to, it's an alternate x86 operating system just like XP or Vista. BTW, if you are a student you can purchase VMware Fusion 2.0 for $40 which works like a dream if you make frequent use of windows apps, it is a MUCH MUCH better option than using boot camp to constantly boot back and forth.

I just acquired an old P4 2.8ghz tower which I want to set up as a network drive for my laptop (I think it's called a NAS). I leave it hooked up to my TV so I can watch downloaded movies. I was going to use XP pro to do this...would Windows Server 2008 be better for this? The same or worse? I don't really know what this program is for, so I would appreciate any help.

I'm not having any luck registering the 64-bit trial version (post-install) using the key from this deal's 32-bit version. Anyone else succeed at this?

Most of my co-workers run Server 2008 on their laptops because Vista is so bloated. With a few tweaks you can make Server 08 look exactly like Vista. Aero glass, start menu, etc. Vista Ultimate has more features, like media center. But I think it's an excellent replacement for home premium. Plus it has Hyper-V for free, so you can run virtual machines at no cost.

I even saw a GUI program that lets you easily enable Vista features in server 08 with a few clicks, like Indexing, Aero, etc. Very slick, and anyone could do it. I personally run Server 2008 on my laptop. My primary reason for server on my laptop was that I can encrypt all partitions with Bitlocker. Vista, even Ultimate, limits you encrypting a single partition.
Can you be so kinda as to let us know which models/laptops? I'm getting a thinkpad t500 -- would like to know if the pointing stick, and the fingerprint reader, etc are compatible. Lenovo drivers are notorious for being junk - from what i've heard. Esp in an application like this, i'd get NO support.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    burn it

then turn on the laptop, make sure BIOS is set top boot DVD drive first

then put in DVD, laptop would say something like 'press a key to boot DVD'.... press a key

then DVD boots, installation works out, blahblahblah... installed

the thing keeping me from doing this is that Windows Server doesnt have Vista Media Center.... only way to use my TV Tuner is either running the 'official' manufacturerer software(sucks up a lot of CPU power) or install Vista on VMWare and run it....
(Vista Media Center uses only 20% of my CPU power when watching TV, which is great)

This is sweet. I registered and all, and did the SSN option to verify as my school wasn't listed. However I have not yet received an email confirmation from them yet and I registered about 20 minutes ago. Is this normal? Are they applying for mortgage and car loans with my info as we speak?

    Nevermind, got it! Thanks!@

It took me two tries and close to a week for the verification to work
