Might run hot, but i've never had a problem with so-called 'death stars' in the last 4-5 years.
Prices just keep on sinking, wonder if this will be 60$ range by the yrs end Good price, thx selma |

Reviews look decent, except for some DOAs due to poor packaging. Newegg customer service is the best, though, so I don't worry about that. In for 1!

If I bought just a cheap SATA external 5.25 drive enclosure that would work fine right? I want an external drive, but this price looks good. Would it be slower than using it as an external?

With a cheapie (no fan) this might get extremely hot. When used for long periods of time or as a media drive.
USB would be slower of course. firewire a little better. E-sata enclosure would be your best bet. |

Better watch out before you buy this drive: (Copied from Newegg's review) It'd DRIVing me crazy. Pros: Autosenses 1.5 or 3Gbps bus, power saving features galore. Because of the constant sleeping and spinning down, the drive is cool at pretty much all times. A bit too ahead of it's time* Cons: *Won't stay awake long enough to NOT kill your data [especially when on esata]. Apparently Hitachi has decided that in order to boast about power saving features and efficiency, they've ramped up the software inside the drive that spins it down when data isn't being accessed/processed and allows the drive to sleep on it's own independent of OS/Bios options. This causes a conundrum for using the drive on the outside or when copying copious amounts of data. Even inside my PC, copying 100GB of data from another sata drive to the hitachi, ~60GB in (about 20 mins) I get a message saying "etc. etc. target device not found". I just hit 'try again' and the drive spun back up and continued - but to me, this is nonsense. I don't want to save power and sacrifice my data. I'd much rather have my 1TB hard drive take as much power it needs to throw around data as safely and as fast as it can possibly be done. Other Thoughts: The drive has many features, including auto sensing 1.5 or 3Gbps sata bus and robust power saving features. Unfortunately I'm finding out the hard way that it's a bit too much for it's own good. The drive while on an esata port continuously spins down and up and will sleep easily with ~20 mins. Because I've been using it as an external drive, this means wrecked data when my DVR tries to access it while it's asleep. 1/4 of the time the worst I get is a short system freeze, the other 3/4 of the time ranges from a few corrupted files to losing upwards up 50+ GB of data. Worst so far is having a directory of 153GB turn into a blank file. Now I have to go retract a review I did of a hard drive enclosure I did, as it obviously isn't the enclosures fault. I've put it into my PC since then, and the only notable bad thing that has happened is that hiccup I mentioned when transferring 100GB of data. I'm giving it a week more on the inside, and if so much as 1kb is lost I'm replacing it. Last edited by jackeroo75; 06-19-2009 at 08:44 AM.. |

Good price, but this drive both runs hot and noisy. Fine for some apps, not so good for others. Certainly not, say, a Tivo drive.

simple solution: pick the right tool for the job. not to rant, but newegg reviewers are horrible for this -- even the seemingly technically savvy ppl (as in this review) don't seem to take this into consideration. If you want fast access times & solid availability, don't buy power-saving devices. |
