In for one, too. This is comparable to last weeks deal of an EX487 which was less than $100 less. No tax or shipping here.

Anyone know the difference between the 490 and 485? Newegg has the 485 with an additional 1TB drive for this price.

The hard drive increased from 750GB to 1TB, and the software is updated to version 3.0. There will be a software upgrade for the ex485 in December for $25.

hmmm...seems like the 485 with the two drives would be a better deal unless I'm missing something.

Two reasons that I am choosing the ex490 is that it is quieter (new power supply), and the eSATA plug on the back allows for a port multiplier.

I've read that you can install win2k8 server on this... but you loose the file replication...

Anyone have any raid solution to this?

I really want one of these for testing AD environment, but need raid for storage as well...

Recently purchased a ex485 from newegg and loving it! The machine is extremely quite, I cannot imagine the ex490 with reduced sound. For this price, highly recommended. The centralization of files has been very helpful in our household. The cost to operate the server is cheap too! If you are watching the electric bill like we do, and would like the benefits of centralized storage, this is the machine for you. We added 2-1TB drives to the factory installed 750gb drive. We are now looking for some more cost effective disk drives to increase storage. As we advance closer to black friday I suspect we will see more 1.5 - 2.0 TB drives for a reasonable price. The plan is to buy a pair of the largest, cost effective, disk drives possible. The hope is we will not need additional storage for at least one year. I did say hope right? :-)

Back to electrical usage. We placed a meter on our ex485 and found the unit consumes around 35-50watts during normal usage. With a backup running and two workstations performing scripted files copies, we have been able to increase the power usage to nearly 70 watts during peak usage. Overall, very easy on the electrical usage and ultimately our electric bill. To help with the savings, we have the system setup to sleep a few hours a day.

This weekend will be the first test of the bare-metal file restore using the application and CDs that came with the server. We saved all the files and we plan to upgrade anyway. This will give us a chance to in effect break the system and test our ability to recover. I would say fingers crossed, honestly not worried either way. Will be nice to see how the recovery process works though.

Although we do not need another media smart server right now, this feels like a good price.

    ... Repped!
