wow so the docking station ends up being free this sounds pretty sweet since I was planning on buying a second 1tb caviar green drive for the intel nas i purchased on sunday from another slickdeals thread.

    http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...?t=1649788

I got the nas with a 1tb caviar green hard drive but the reviews say you need to format the hard drives before poping them into the nas or the nas wont boot up. This would save me time and frustration of poping open my desktops case and hooking up the hard drive to my motherboard to format it

considering the best price offered by newegg on WD10EADS is $75, one gets the docking station for $10 without any rebate. seems like a gud deal to me.

Only bad thing about this deal is that the docking station only support USB 2.0, but not E-SATA. (Thermaltake has another docking station which support both USB 2.0 and E-SATA)

But it is still a good deal overall.

Agree, if you are moving or copying large files then USB stinks.
I have the esata version and it works great for moving files from one htpc to another.

Definitely good deal. I saw a 750GB green on ebay for $60 shipped and thought that was pretty cheap. This is even better.

I got the 1T about a week ago at Fry's for $60, plus tax. I couldn't believe it, smokin' deal, I thought, I bought three. I later learned that the Green 1T is supposed to be a bit slow, compared to the non-green version, but that is a minor consideration for me.

What is the benefit of a docking station over an external case?

Allows you to clone a drive with the OS and everything making it plug and play, basically. This is the way to go, IMO. You can also access just about any information on the SATA drive without having to use it to boot. I'm going to back up the two hard drives at the church, put them in the safe, and have an almost perfect "back up plan." Oh, that's the other advantage. You disconnect the drive when you're not cloning it, where there's no chance of any electricity getting past a surge, etc.
