Comfy Inn Just 10 Miles from the Pacific Coast
In 1851, pioneer settlers staked out their homesteads in the Tillamook Valley, a cool, wet area with lush grass—perfect for raising dairy cows. Today, Tillamook is the epicenter of central Oregon’s lush dairy country, situated between windswept beaches and a coastal mountain range. The AAA three-diamond Ashley Inn of Tillamook is surrounded by winding tributaries that eventually empty into Tillamook Bay.
Inside the inn, there are more than 50 WiFi-equipped rooms that feature plush memory-foam mattresses, cable TV, and DVD players. You can stock up on treats at the onsite mini-mart and stash your goodies in your in-room refrigerator. Each morning, the innkeepers lay out a complimentary hot breakfast. And, if you don’t want to travel the 10 miles to the sea, feel free to take a dip in the Ashley Inn’s indoor saltwater pool or soak in the hot tub.
Tillamook, Oregon: Pastoral Town with Unique Museums and Renowned Dairy Factory
Located just a few miles from the Pacific coast, Tillamook is a quaint town of about 5,000 residents nestled in a valley with rolling green hills and grazing cattle. The town supports several unique museums, including the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center, where you’ll find mid-19th century and modern quilts, and Tillamook Air Museum, located within a World War II blimp hangar. The air museum boasts a collection of more than 30 restored vintage military aircraft, known colloquially as “warbirds.”
One of Tillamook’s biggest claims to fame is the Tillamook cheese factory, an award-winning dairy farm that dates back more than 100 years. The dairy farmers still use the same century-old cheddar-cheese recipe, which you can sample after a self-guided tour of the factory.
Alternatively, you can stroll the beach at Cape Meares, located roughly 10 miles away. Within Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge, there are several nature trails. When hiking here, keep an eye out for native shorebirds and the so-called “Octopus Tree”—a sitka spruce Oregon Heritage tree with massive, tentacle-esque branches that was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
