As you travel down the river, there are several opportunities to disembark and cycle through the river towns, and the cost of bicycle rentals is included with this Groupon. The lengths of the biking day trips range from 9 to 35 miles, and some routes can be shortened for leisure cyclists.
Days 1–3: Passau, Germany, Through the Great Loop
The rundown: After transferring from Munich, you’ll start your trip by bus or bike in the river city of Passau, where three rivers converge. You’ll pass through classic European villages in Austria, such as Engelhartszell and Brandstatt.
Trip highlight: St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Passau is the largest cathedral organ in the world, with 17,774 pipes and 233 registers.
Day 4: Imperial Palaces Around Hainburg, Historical Castles in Bratislava
The rundown: You’ll travel by bus or bike from the medieval Austrian town of Hainburg into Bratislava, Slovakia, along the former boundary of the Iron Curtain. Bratislava is lined with castles and medieval architecture amid mountain scenery.
Trip highlight: The Imperial Palace of Hof comprises a stately palace, landscaped baroque gardens, and a manor farm.
Day 5: Budapest, Hungary
The rundown: Sometimes called “Paris of the East,” Budapest has elegant wide boulevards, world-class museums and opera houses, Art Nouveau architecture, and a lively nightlife. You’ll have a day to explore the city.
Trip highlight: Cruising the Danube, you’ll get a full view of the city, including its famous series of bridges decorated with lions and eagles.
Days 6–7: Danube Bend to Vienna, Austria
The rundown: The scenic Hungarian village of Visegrád is known for its fortress and 14th-century palace ruins. You’ll take a bike or bus tour through here, and the route continues onto the riverside town of Esztergom, and then to Vienna, a cultural mecca. Play your cards right and you can catch a show at the Vienna State Opera, which has counted Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss among its directors.
Trip highlight: Vienna is a treasure in its own right, but don’t overlook Esztergom; it has been a center of Roman Catholicism for more than 1,000 years and is home to the Esztergom Basilica, one of Hungary’s largest Catholic churches.
Days 8–10: Wachau, Austria, to Passau, Germany
The rundown: By bus or bike, you’ll tour the Austrian countryside, speckled with castles, monasteries, and vineyards. To end the trip, you'll transfer back to Munich for a one-night stay in an airport hotel.
Trip highlight: Check out the small baroque town of Dürnstein and its monastery church, a landmark of the Wachau valley.
