Placid Lakefront Resort near Miles of Woodland Trails
North Woods Inn & Resort sits along the banks of Fourth Lake in upstate New York’s enormous Adirondack Park. From the property’s natural-wood patio, you can see the spring-fed body of water, the densely pined bluffs on its opposite shore, and the Adirondack Mountains just beyond.
When the weather’s warm, you don’t need to leave the area to find adventure. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular here—the north and middle branches of the Moose River border the resort. Paddle through the north branch and you might see Great Blue Herons, beavers, or otters amid the backcountry scenery. It’s also possible to go fishing for northern pike, muskie, and trout in any of the various waterways. Class V hiking trails crisscross the grounds and the adjacent woods, too.
Guests staying in the jacuzzi suites can enjoy a complimentary bottle of wine while soaking in the en suite jetted tub.
Old Forge, New York: Quiet Town with Hiking amid the Adirondack Mountains
The tiny hamlet of Old Forge is tucked away in upstate New York in the heart of the Adirondacks. Nearby Adirondack Park occupies more than 6 million acres, making it the country’s largest National Historic Landmark. It’s home to 46 of the highest peaks in the Adirondack Range—a grouping known among mountaineers as “the 46.” Anyone who manages to climb each peak takes his or her place among an exclusive group. But amateurs beware: 20 of the 46 mountains are trail-less and require bushwhacking to reach the top.
There’s an average annual snowfall of around 220 inches in Old Forge, and it typically stays chilly here through March and April.
If you want to spend a day indoors, there’s View, an interactive multi-arts center in Old Forge. The center aims to preserve the creative spirit of the Adirondacks with musical performances, art exhibits, and workshops ranging from woodworking to memoir writing.
