Family-Owned Lodge and Golf Course amid Scenic Catskills
Blackhead Mountain Lodge and Country Club is truly a family affair. Opened by Mr. and Mrs. Maassmann in 1967 as a summer resort, the lodge has evolved into a year-round recreation hot spot nestled in the Catskill foothills. Today, you'll still see the founding couple helping out with the daily upkeep. Sons Ed and Peter share responsibilities of the golf course, the clubhouse, and resort maintenance. You may spot the Maassmann grandkids lending a hand in the restaurant and pro shop. The family prides itself on hospitality, helping guests at Blackhead Mountain Lodge and Country Club to feel right at home.
Designed by Nicholas Psiahas, the country club’s par 72 championship course and its scenic greens are carved into the mountainous terrain, creating a scenic and naturally challenging course. For lunch, grab a chopped sirloin burger or a German pork bratwurst at the 19th hole Club House, located in a rustic century-old barn. Or visit the onsite Maassmann's Restaurant, awash in cozy, Old-World European-style decor. There, the executive chef whips up contemporary American dishes alongside authentic German fare such as wiener schnitzel and sauerbraten—oven-roasted beef doused in gravy and topped with lederhosen.
Blackhead Mountain Lodge’s 22 rooms spread out across the resort in three motel-style buildings and one house. Admire the surrounding scenery from the comfort of your abode, or relax after a round of golf in front of the wall-mounted LCD TV. In the morning, the chefs at Maassmann's Restaurant prepare a breakfast feast that includes eggs, pancakes, and french toast.
Round Top, New York: Summer Recreation in the Hudson Valley
The small town of Round Top is located just west of the Hudson River in the Catskills. About 20 miles from the resort, visitors find a flurry of year-round activities at Hunter Mountain. Once the snow melts, the Scenic Skyride chairlift takes passengers up to the 3,200-foot summit of Hunter Mountain for views that encompass New England's Berkshires and Green Mountains on a clear day. Other summertime activities include ziplining, hiking, fly-fishing, and disk golf. The mountain hosts a variety of ethnic festivals throughout the summer, including the annual German Alps Festival (August 11–12), featuring traditional music, dancers, and food.
