just take temporarily someone's sim card that has data plan and get connected first time and create profile or login. Once profile is established with the phone; you don't need data plan. BTW...

Yes. Works very well except for you are on Edge data speeds (2G). Works for email though and if you have plenty of Wifi around. Surfing on Edge long term can try your patience but works in a pinch.
