Would it be easy to save to your hard drive the contents of the emails you want to keep? And then simply close the email account?

You can go into your settings and choose to view 500 emails per page, which will allow you to delete them in blocks of 500, so if you have 5,000 emails in there, you'll be able to clean it up in 2 or...
