pop3 is enabled, so I wonder why they would disable imap (much more efficient method).
I had her ask the IT guy (who has a major god complex) why imap was/is disabled.... we'll see what happens.

You would hope they would, Pop has better wide spread compatability though.

Did they disable the Exchange interface? This is by far the best way to get access to Gmail and not have extra copies of mail stored all over the place.

I mean from a multi-device/access POV, IMAP is much better for organization. I remember the days of POP3 and having multiple copies of emails, different organizational structures, what a PITA.

My school uses Gmail (and I love it), under "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" you should see
IMAP Access: Status: IMAP is enabled
If you don't as others say the school can control it, the one sucky...

Security meaning if pop3 is the way they want to go and the method they want to support, no point in enabling imap and leaving possible backdoors open.

They don't trust teachers either.... haven't you read the news? Again you are out of luck unless you affect school IT policies.

That might work if its setup for pop3 not to delete the emails after it pulls them from the server. Plus if this is the case they should be archiving it even if the user deletes the email.

IMAP gives the use too much access over the entire e-mail tree (even other users can be affected and YOU control the e-mail). They want to preserve evidence also so they can fire you if you violate...

It's an option for the university to enable/disable pop, imap, and google sync access. If you're just seeing the forward option, that is probably what is happening.

The default of POP3 is to leave a copy on the server. The user is always working with a copy not the original.
