you have to make sure you provide enough fresh air. an unfinished garage should have enough air leaking in. if it's finished you'll have to crack a window or door or add a vent to the outside....

The same way that cooking on a gas stove doesnt kill you. As long as it doesn't burn up all the oxygen its fine. Natural gas/propane burns very cleanly. Just in case though, it has a sensor...
