Regarding the pending April 2.2 update, here's the latest from a blog, apparently written by a B&N manager:
"Nook Color will be updated based solely on serial numbers, Starting with Nooks released in November and moving forward from that in groups, this is due to the size of the update and to prevent extremely slow download speeds of the update."
So if rooters (especially Autonooters) encounter an automatic update who bought this before xmas, please post here what it did to your Nook (brick, rerootable, etc.) and what you were able to do with it afterwards (eg install CM7 etc.) I'm hoping for a v4 autonoot without having to do complicated resets. Thanks

If you read any articles and are new to this:
NC: Nook Color
Root: Similar to 'Admin' control on a Windows system. Root is user/app access to everything the system and Android version have to offer.
uSD: MicroSD card
eMMC: The Nook Color's internal memory
GAPPS: Google Apps (required for many Google related apps like the Market, GMail, and YouTube)
Nookie Froyo: A popular custom firmware based on Android 2.2 for the Nook Color
HC/Honeycomb: Android 3.0, currently the version available is based on the emulator provided for testing apps and not the full release by Google (because it isn't released yet)
AOSP: Android Open-Source Project. This is the host of full source codes and where app developers go to keep up to date. This acronym is regularly used to refer to the full source code of an Android version released by Google, also called going AOSP.
ROM: Essentially a collection of settings and pathways that tell the OS how to handle things. Custom ROMs are very popular with Android devices to accomplish many things from overclocking to unlocking additional hardware.
SU: SuperUser, this is an app used to help grant Root access on Android devices.
CWR: ClockWork Recovery, a tool used for backing up or modifying the NC's eMMC.
Despite being single core, the NC hardware is capable of playing many android games well (as well as streaming/mpg video). To see what I mean, check HERE [youtube.com]

Since there was some concern in regards to refurb unit(s) being shipped as new and how they were packaged, I posted a few pics of how the “factory new” one I received today was packaged in post #1542
===========================================================
FYI: Square Trade Warranty
The website throws an error since B&N listed the item in the 'Other' category.
I called the 1-800 number and was told about it by the CSR.
I told him the item was new and being sold by B&N directly on Ebay.
He then said I could purchase it over the phone.
A 3-yr std. warranty was 23.09 after 30% coupon; no ADH coverage since it is an Ebay purchase.
He made the purchase and added the item page to my ST account; put me on hold and went silent for a long time.
When he came back he said he talked with his supervisor and offered to make this a full retail purchase.
He asked if it came with a receipt, which it did (the packing slip which has all the details).
That was all that was needed and he canceled the first purchase and made a second one in the system as a retail purchase.
So I got the warranty which is their full-coverage warranty for 3 yrs with ADH.
$49.99 - 15% = $34.99 for 3-yrs.
Talk to a CSR and see if you can get the same deal. Mention the receipt that comes with the box and specifically mention the clause 'Return to your local Barnes & Noble store with this receipt' listed on the receipt. Being able to return this item to a local store makes it on par with a store-bought item.
Whether the local store honors this or not is immaterial for the purposes of purchasing the warranty.
If one CSR doesn't oblige, wait for a few hours and call again till you find someone who will do it.
Also, I noticed the packing slip/receipt does not mention 'Ebay' anywhere.
So I believe it would work even if you purchased the retail warranty from ST and then scanned the receipt and email it to them. They have no way of knowing that it is an ebay purchase from the receipt.
Good Luck!
PS.: Mine came shrink wrapped and attached to a cardboard with another layer of wrap. Don't know what to think, but it looks new and it works just fine. So I'm not gonna worry about it anymore. There are no problems with the screen, wifi, touch inputs or anything else so far. Rooted it with Auto-Nooter (10 min. job for a first time rooter) and its working great so far.

Basic differences in various Options to Root your Nook Color
-- Android 2.1 - AutoNooter. Simply roots your device and allows you to access the market.
-- Android 2.2 - NookieFroyo. Upgrades the OS to 2.2 (Froyo) and is very stable with full functionality.
-- Android 2.3 - CM7 or Phiremod - Upgrades to Gingerbread. Works very well. Is stable. Some features are lacking (i.e - I can't get YouTube to work)
-- Android 3.0 - Honeycomb build based off the latest SDK. Buggy. However, it is pretty darn cool. if you can put up with FC's and other things like that then Honeycomb is the route to go.
All of the ROM's are available at XDA. Just search for the forum for the Nook Color and go into the Android Development section. They are all listed near the top.

Any help you nice peeps can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Any help you nice peeps can give me will be greatly appreciated.
The basic steps for most flashes are:
1. Write the clockwork image to your SD card using Disc Imager
2. Copy the ROM image file to the SD card
3. Insert the SD card and reboot
4. Use the CW recovery system to clear data (each build has different suggestions - consult the documentation of that build).
5. Load the zip from the SD card
6. Remove the card and reboot your system
The only problems I ran into was around the Disc Imager. If I didn't run it as an administrator (W7 64) the operation would fail. Other than that it's been pretty simple. You may also want to try a different SD card as that could be a potential issue.
In the week that I've had my NC I've flashed it maybe 5 times already. Went to HC yesterday but I think I'm going to try CM7 next.
As for which ROM - it's really a matter of preference. I would definitely go with an eMMC install. Mine have been more stable and definitely quicker (I'm using an 8GB Class 6). I was a little worried at first but it's been real simple to flash different ROM's when the image is on the internal HD. I can tell you that HC is really nice and I love having a change of pace from my Evo but as much as I love it there are just a lot of bugs. Some apps won't open at all for me. Other force close on a regular basis. The enhancements to Email and the Calendar are nice but they don't outweigh the problems for me. I guess I'll wait for v5 or AOSP before going with HC again.
Nookie Froyo was real nice. Very stable - very few problems. Haven't tried CM7 yet - that's my next adventure ... for tomorrow.
