Quote : After a wide series of users have complained about problems involving SSDs based on second-generation SandForce controllers, the controller maker has now finally identified the bug behind the BSOD/disconnect issues and has released a fix, which was implemented by OCZ in its latest firmware.http://news.softpedia.com/news/OC...8277.shtml |
If you buy any of the OCZ drives be sure that you UPDATE TO THE LATEST FIRMWARE IMMEDIATLY...FAILURE TO DO SO WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO DATA LOSS!!!! and an array of other problems such as BSODs, freezing, reboots, loss partitions. Cause of this is not OCZ themselves but the SANDFORCE hardware they decided to use in their drives, so if the drive uses SANDFORCE (which is the majority of OCZ's drives) be sure to update the firmware to the latest.
Lots of people having problems, but "supposedly" updating to the latest firmware fixes "most" of the issues. More info/horror stories/firmware can be found at OCZ forums http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?254-Vertex3-Agility3-Solid3-support-and-discussion-forum

Firmware flashing tips:
DISCONNECT ALL HARD/SSD DRIVES EXCEPT the target source SSD and 1 DVD/CD drive
Be sure that the SSD is on SATA port 0/1 in order to flash (u can change channels later after flash) ensure SSD is detected in BIOS.
Enable AHCI SATA mode (in BIOS/CMOS)
DISABLE CMOS Hot Plug/External SATA settings on the SSD port.
Save CMOS settings, re-boot and after reboot power off PC.
At this stage, only the SSD on SATA port 0/1 and CD/DVD drives SATA port 4/5 should be attached
Put the Bootable Tools CD in it’s drive, change Boot Order to CD/DVD first and Boot to it.
Secure Erase the SSD
Force Flash the latest Firmware.
SHUT DOWN then POWER on and you are done.

The Sandforce based SSD drives have been very problematic - blue screens, disappearing from bios, lock-ups. With each firmware update, people are hoping for a resolution, only to see the saga continue.
I avoided Sandforce and went with a Marvell based Crucial M4 myself, which are known to be rock solid.
I rather pay a little more and avoid Sandforce.
i have a Vertex 2 and it has been amazing. i have nothing against other controllers; theyre all pretty amazing. the M4 is great. Indilinx's controllers are great too - im still using my original 30GB Vertex and it's rock solid.
I have a laptop Kingston v100+ 64gb on a thinkpad and the speed improved dramatically from my prev wd400 gb hdd.
Just crossing my fingers for no bsod or bios lockups.
Im not sure what uncompressable files are and if the vertex is worth that much more $?
How do I get these onto a desktop... 2.5"? Don't I need 3.5"?
