This is my first deal post, so be kind:
First the refurb. This has been posted before, but the deal was dead for a while and is now live agan. MWave.com has a refurbished Hannspree ST289MUB for 189.99 with free shipping: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SKUSea...ia=BA47551 TigerDirect has the same monitor for $249.99 with a $50 MIR, but no free shipping: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applic...No=6087494 This is a great price on a 28" monitor, even for a Hannspree. This one has the bonus of a built-in TV tuner, built-in speakers, a remote control, and a 16:10 aspect ratio (you get an extra 120 vertical pixels over the new lower-res 1080p monitors). I have one of these from a previous deal, and was happy to find that it is an anti-glare screen, also something that's becoming somewhat rare. It does not have a DVI input, so if your computer doesn't have an HDMI output, be sure to order a cheap DVI->HDMI convertor (Monoprice has them). I know that the slickdeals crowd doesn't really like Hannspree, so if you're worried about reliability, just grab a SquareTrade warranty ... this is still a decent deal even with the price of the warranty added - but make sure to find a coupon online first!

For people who intended to use it as a TV, was going to buy until I read this:
"Cant use any known wall mount because instead of a standard 4 or 8 hole mount this has 6 holes in the back and two are in the middle of the back. I had to make my own mount. Most mounts that would fit this are intended for 40 of above tvs and would be wider than the tv is." VESA specs are clearly noted in specifications. This mount from Monoprice [monoprice.com] looks like it would work just fine. WARNING : You CANNOT return this LCD to TigerDirect. You have to work with the manufacturer for that. I called the manufacturer and according to them they do NOT issue any refunds, they only do warranty repairs and exchanges. I bought this monitor to use it with a Mac and the FONTS are not good

The colors are good not great, the pictures are crisp, no blur. I would recommend to get it.

Kind of nervous because if you sort newegg reviews for it by date posted, all the recent reviews are for dead monitors and poor warranty service.

Not an entirely fair comparison... but I do see it's the same 27.5" 800:1 contrast panel, so I personally wouldn't buy it.

I checked google products, and the model the deal is on has 4.5/5 stars with 281 reviews:

Hopefully the problems you mentioned are limited to the model you linked (although I did notice that the average rating on Newegg was 5/5 eggs).
