I follow this person NLee on Amazon for LSD battery reviews, and NLee likes these [amazon.com] about as much as (gen 1, 1000x recharge cycle) eneloops.
If you only charge your batteries every day, at 1000x cycles you'd still get almost 3 years before the batteries on average start to quickly lose maximum capacity. Plenty of time for the next gen to show up.
TU on this, but I'm happy to keep my ($2+tax)/batt gen 2 eneloop AA's from Costco.

Although when I really get into a game, as in maybe 4-8 hours a day, I probably replace my wireless headphones and controller batteries every 1-2 days. I hear train sets go through batteries pretty well too.
But yeah, recharge cycles. When I heard news of a gen 2 I was disappointed that it was a recharge cycle increase, not capacity (although from what I read there's not much more can be done about capacity, up to electronics designers to make them work on less juice).
