Autozone, Pep Boys, and Advance will scan your car for free and can provide more detailed code information. <--- Not true in all areas. Our auto parts stores no longer do this due to complaints from local mechanic shops. Check w/ your local auto parts store first. This tool is a go/nogo tester. It will tell you if the emissions monitors have run and will report the numeric trouble code.
Other tools are available for $70 - $100 that provide troubleshooting information and live monitors.
There are also tools available that connect to your laptap to read the OBDII information. The brand name tools sell in the $50 range and require software ($70-$500) to work. Be cautious with the cheap "clone" tools sold on ebay and elsewhere. There have been a number of problems reported with them, they are unreliable and can damage the computer in the car, and are not ELM compliant and don't work with the diagnostic software.

note that you dont have to reset the SES light as it will go off once the onboard computer detects that the problem has gone away.
also dont even think about resetting the SES light right before an inspection! they will know!
