To check if it was ever flashed with a custom rom: When you receive the phone, when it's powered off, hold volume- & home button & press power and let go of power to see if it has ever been flashed with a custom rom. The count should show 0. If it is 1 or more, you got a used phone. This happened to me with one of the 3rd party sellers from Amazon.
There is a custom flash counter in these new Galaxy devices. It tracks how many custom flashes you have done (for warranty purposes), and you can't reset it unless you have a USB jig which costs around $1-$2 on ebay from China. And there are some instructions [xda-developers.com]you have to follow to reset it if you wish.
To root, you have to make sure the version is the same as in the list. You can root this phone using CFRootFlasher [xda-developers.com] to get clockworkmod without increasing the flash count, and then install custom kernel such as abyssnote 4.2 kernel [xda-developers.com] along with setcpu to get undervolt/overclock/backup and recovery/led light indicator. No need to purchase anything. It is harder than rooting Nexus S, so maybe it's not for the faint heart.

This version has support for all the other bands + FM radio. Exynos processor is better in 3D graphics vs the U.S. flavor. Otherwise they are similar to performance. You are also likely to see Ice Cream Sandwich way earlier on this device, since the update comes directly from Samsung.
Oh, the white version!

I thought it is a good deal.
Tempted to purchase, but I have Tmobile, so I guess it won't work?
