Can an existing user buy this and use it to extend an existing account? Or would I have to wait until my subscription expires?

ALSO it appears the "rebate" comes in the form of a pre-paid VISA card. I was kind of hoping for a check but oh well ._.

Yes. The process varies by version. Enter the license key you receive and it will extend your subscription another year. The clock starts on all 3 licenses when the first one is activated. Stated differently, if one license is activated today, and another in two months, the second license provides a ten month subscription.

If you're using a version of prior to NIS 2012, upgrade to the latest version at updatecenter.norton.com [norton.com]

All Norton rebates are paid this way. It's pretty easy to spend the entire value. Example - make a partial payment on your cable or phone bill for the amount of the card; spend until there's just a few $ left on the card and use it at a merchant that can do a split payment, authorizing your card for just the amount left and paying the remainder with another card.

Norton rebates are averaging six weeks from submission to when you receive the Visa card.

Yes, but you are better off waiting until your subscription is almost expired because they just "reset" it to 366 days, they don't tack it on to what you already have - unless things have changed...

As long as the rebate promotion number is different you should be able to receive both.

The time period is key but also check the rebate #. I think you are probably fine.

You are correct- that is is how it is. I just ran into this the other day. Was going to use an old but unused Version 3 Activation Key to add to the current subscription (Ver 6) and the message about resetting the subscription period to 1 year (vs adding the 1 year to the current subscription) appeared. Don't know when this change occurred.
