This is not a bad deal. The 55-250 has some terrible scores on DXOMark though. So does the kit lets. The 50mm is very good. I was planning to get the body only and the 50mm, and then get the Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 USM as a solid walkaround when I win the lottery. But yeah, I guess this is ok. Anyone else have any thoughts? The kit lens and telescopic as really mediocre (at least according to DXO).

Been thinking about getting one of these cameras, but haven't had too much time to track the deals recently. I have a 10% off electronics coupon from ebay (up to $100) that expires Saturday. And it's hard to find a reliable internet camera retailer that doesn't hit NY with tax these days. Is this a pull the trigger and ask questions later deal at $810?

Maybe Nate meant to say the other poster was being a captain-obvious? It's an electronic item, there's always better prices 3-4 months later.

Frys pricematch was basically fraud though. Everyone knowingly used an ad that was declared a misprint / price error and tried to get Walmart to pricematch hoping they wouldn't call to check. Frys pulled the ad from papers and updated all their pages besides files that were leftover on their servers. Using an incorrect ad knowingly is no different than photoshopping one to say the price you want.

As for this a deal, the t3i kit has legally been priced as low as $600. Add a $100 for the 50mm and about $200 for the 55-250mm would put this at a good deal for $900 -- probably the best in a while.

You've obviously never touched this lens before. Don't judge a lens by price only. The 50mm f/1.8 is a fantastic lens. It matches up well with the T3i. The great majority of people find the build quality to be fine. Mine has held up well over the years. Of course, I'm not shooting war zones, just weddings, portraits, and messy children.

I don't see much significant differences between the 1.8 and 1.4 two in real shooting. However, if you want to talk IQ, the 1.8 is arguably BETTER than the f/1.4 (less vignetting and less aberration).

Any one else got ideas about coupons for ebay and stacking them? urlhasbeenblocked etc?

Well, obviously the kit lens and 55-250 arent going to compete with the 24-70 or any of Canon's L lenses, but, for someone starting out, they are good options. This combo allows you to go from 18-250, plus have the ability to shoot in low light.

Obviously you can do better with upgrading certain lenses...but, then you're talking $1500, $2000, etc...instead of $900 here. As a starting set, it has pretty low risk.

The T4i is around the corner, and thats why I have been sitting on my hands. If you absolutely have to have it now, then this is not a bad deal. If you can wait, then wait. The new T4i comes with a much better kits lens with silent auto focus and caps at 105mm (I think). Its an all around better camera with possible upgraded sensor etc.
