FYI i have not found the direct female micro hdmi to full size male hdmi. not sure it exists at this point
Another benefit to these cables is it allows fitting of the microUSB cable/adapter right next to it without dremeling/shaving down the adapters.
to those with non-atrix phones, the easiest way to get this to work with your phone is to simply unscrew and remove the dock portion, leaving the cables hanging out the back. then you can orient them any way youd like.
here are some photos of the teardown: http://www.techrepublic.com/photo...468?seq=24
id like to hear what someone who uses this thing for what it was designed for has to say about this.
i dont have an atrix but have found plenty of cool uses for this, particularly as a portable secondary monitor, something to take to a lan party or when traveling with a gaming console, or for quick tests with hdmi based systems where it is inconvenient to pull out a standard display.
for these functions its great!

This is essentially what Motorola was doing by themselves for certain phones. I don't know if yours supports it and whats involved in installing/configuring it, but this should hopefully get you started.
Despite reading everywhere that it was only compatible with AT&T on a special tethering plan, and not finding anyone who could verify that it works elsewhere (specifically the built-in Firefox browser which I wanted), I took a leap of faith and ordered it on eBay for $60 from 1saleaday before they sold out. I bugged their customer support relentlessly, contending that there MUST be a way to get this to be 100% compatible on other carriers. They maintained that there was no way and would not even hint to suggest that I may get lucky and it may work. They advised me to decline the package upon delivery or to return it for a refund. I was skeptical and kept bugging them but they maintained that I should not even try it on another carrier.
I shipped it to a US address (receiving service) where I have to cross the border to pick up my deliveries, so I called up my receiver, gave them the tracking number and told them to decline the package. They said they'd try, but made no guarantees. I checked the tracking info and, to my disappointment, it was successfully delivered. I couldn't blame the receiver because they're super busy and offer a good service for Canadians who live near the border. So I went over and picked it up - they apologized for letting it slip through and I told them I would just pay tax on it at the border, try it at home and either send it back or sell it. Of course, sending it back via Canada Post after paying tax on it would've put my investment up to about 80 or 90.
I could've left it sealed, in the box, but who could resist the temptation to try it? Also, I read the post about the guy who resold his lapdock on eBay, with the assumption that it was new/working, and found out from his buyer that it was a lemon. So I figured I would verify that it was working
For 60 bucks, I'm pleased with the lapdock. I had my doubts, given all the harsh reviews, but I'm glad that I gambled and my receiver didn't decline it. In my opinion, the lapdock delivers what it promises in terms of functionality. I used to have one of the first netbooks that came out (Asus Eee PC) and the performance is comparable to that so I'm not disappointed since I was expecting the worst. The display panel quality seems good and the chiclet keyboard is nice - very similar to my Asus laptop. Like many people, when I first heard about the lapdock when I bought my phone, I wondered if I could sell my laptop and use the lapdock instead. It might be a bit early to tell, but I think I probably could sell my laptop and get by with the lapdock in a pinch, given that I rarely have a need for mobile computing anyway. I use the "pocketcloud" app sometimes to remotely connect to my desktop from my phone, so I'm assuming that the lapdock would serve its purpose for this. I have a lot of junk on my phone and I'm wondering if I format it and do a fresh install if it will run any better.
I know I'm long-winded but, on another note, I have a question for the experienced Android gurus. I've heard rumors that Motorola is switching the lapdock from webtop to ICS and that there are even people claiming that they are running ICS on their lapdock already. If Motorola switches from webtop to ICS as I've read will happen, how will this transition work? How would one go about switching to ICS? Or better yet, how can I hack it to use ICS right away? I'm clueless as to how I would go about it. Can anyone provide more details on this? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for this post. I just received mine and got the HDMI hooked up to my netbook. This will be an awesome addition for me on the road. I am having a problem with setting up the mouse/keyboard (hopefully gain access to the fn keys too). When you plugged it in, did it just auto-configure in windows or did you have to do anything different with it? I may have a problem with my male - male USB cable as I just spliced together a couple cables, but I'll look into that while I wait for a reply

yep, i do this frequently. additionally, with the right adapter, you can even fully utilize the keyboard and mouse on a normal PC (just remember to disconnect the red pin/wire on the USB port, or in the cable like i did!!!).... i use this, and a male to male USB cable:

No English instructions? Contents not as described on the box? This item is not "brand new", and should not have been listed as such.
Typically, I'm pretty generous and forgiving with my feedback. But since this same thing has happened to at least two others participating in this thread, I'm going straight to negative feedback... no resolution process for these folks!

Thanks for the fast response! Yeah, having this on the road is going to be amazing. Were you able to control the brightness on the lapdock via the lapdock keyboard after you plugged it into your computer? I wouldn't imagine so since I'm sure you'd need drivers to enable that functionality.
