I think it appeals to the following crowd:
- fans for the graphic novel it's based on
- people who ever seriously dreamed about being in a band
- people who grew up playing 8-bit games ( Zelda, Sonic, Mario, etc. )
- people who like anime / manga in general
When you have an intersection of two or more, your enjoyment likely increases dramatically. I covered all four, which might explain my feelings for the movie.
Even though I have my original pre-order copy, TU as I will probably purchase another "just in case" copy.
And that chick was pretty cute in Death Proof as the actress in the cheerleader outfit.

I think the thing you're missing is that it's a deeply satirical movie, even of itself. I actually thought the acting was spot on. A lot of the so called "bad acting" was actually obvious satire, sorry if that went way over your head. I also found the "poorly sequenced action" hilarious since again it was satirizing action movies as well as "comic movies". The "poor character development" comment likewise doesn't make sense because it was a geek playing his own life as a video game. It played out the way character development "plays out" in a video game. That was blatantly intentional how they portrayed it. That also applies to the plot. It has the plot arc of a video game, the type that it's satirizing so it was perfectly apropos. I didn't notice any particularly fat chicks, but then again I'm not usually sitting there counting how many "fat chix" there are in a movie. None of the prominent characters were fat.
I also generally disagree that this film was aimed for teens. I think it's easy to miss that because of the "fake HS gf" thing who the protagonist is only dating at the start because he got dumped hard and withdrew into a cocoon state and that was exaggerated to make a statement.
That said, I thought this movie was quite funny, and kept me engaged for the entire film. <shrug> I picked it up from Amazon, right after xmas, when it went down to $9.99, so I could watch it again and see what I missed the first time round.
The movie revolves around a socially awkward guy who lives life like a video game in a satirical manner . There are many references to nerd/game/geeky culture. Overall, I thought it was a well done movie without ruining the comics and I am not a fan of Michael Cera.
