I got this for $39 the last time it was on sale. Some important details:

1. The item is not branded Toshiba. Instead, based on its properties showing up in Windows, it looks like an internal Toshiba part put in a generic casing. Now, there is no way to tell for sure whether the internal part was manufactured by Toshiba or not. But since most stuff is actually made by manufacturers none of us have heard of before it is not a big deal normally.

2. Not having a manufacturer selling through normal channels is important here, however, because you get only a 30-day warranty offered by an ebay seller. So either the thing is DOA and you get your money back (which you would have anyways through ebay buyer protection) or you are purchasing an electronic without warranty protection or a real manufacturer.

3. The unit has two usb cables. One is to handle data (looks like a printer USB port) and the other works solely to transmit power. So if you are usb port limited, plan ahead.

4. There is no software included. This won't be an issue for data but playing a movie through the actual disc may cost you money for additional software.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and the unit continues to run well after a few weeks. But these caveats are very important and help explain why the unit is relatively inexpensive.

In case someone wants to change to internal do you know if it's sata or pata(ide) ?

Edit #2: OK, answering my own question... If this is the same drive as from this Slickdeals thread then it's SATA. It looks the same, has the same Toshiba part number reference and is from the same seller.

I bought this fairly recently for $39. I put it in my HP DV7 laptop and have been using it since to backup my blu-ray collection.

Works great, was ridiculously easy to install, put this in, took out the regular DVD drive and put it in the external enclosure, now i have an external dvd drive that i dont need... Great deal!

The internal interface is just like the inside of a laptop, so you wont be able to use it for a external hard drive of anything like that. i can take a picture if you guys want a better look... post back

out of curiosity i went and got it and upon further inspection, it is SATA! how i did not see this before is beyond me

Im gonna pull the trigger and rip it apart, put the bluray in my xps 15 L502x. might as well use them ebay bucks on somethin cool

EDIT: just realized something, will this play 3D bluray movies????? I have the GT540 video card that does 3D but not sure if this particular drive can handle a bluray 3D movie??? anyone know?

Wonder why the separate cables??? One would think they should be able to make it one cable for both power and data like most other USB devices, otherwise it's tempting and has a nice sleek look...

I believe one USB cable is for data and power and there other is just power. It needs more power then provided by one USB port.

Does the power cable NEED to be connected to the laptop/desktop or can it be connected to a usb wall charger like the one used for my cellphone?
