Guys this has an e-IPS panel, 6-bit. It's not a kosher IPS, but much better than TN.
source: Currently use this monitor. I own both 8bit and this dell u2412. There is a difference but it is minuscule. 6bit panels use dithering to achieve 24bit depth. The major difference in colors here is going to be caused by dell's anti-glare coating which really reduces eye strain with ambient light but does diffuse colors. Dell is selling this directly for $299 right now. FREE SHIPPING Includes 3Yr PREMIUM PANEL Ltd. Warranty, 3 yr Advanced Exchange (Dell's warranty on UltraSharp is awesome) <== preliminary ship date 5/23. newegg is instock http://accessories.us.dell.com/sn...u=320-2676 Dell also is currently offering a free $50 promotional egift card with the purchase of $300 or more in paid egift cards: Get a $50 Promo eGift Card when you buy $300 eGift card -@Dell ends 5/22

But in all seriousness, I'm very much enjoying my Achieva Shimian IPSB (Tempered glass)

LG makes the screen in this Dell and most IPS monitors. I have two 2412Ms, but am waiting for the pricing on the LG IPS4 series before I buy another. Their press release makes it sound as though they're going to be competitively priced with TN screens. Since LG makes the screens, they can charge what they like. Given that 27" TN's can be had for $250, this seems worth waiting for.
"LG's IPS4 series will first become available in Asia in May followed by Europe and North America in the coming weeks."

LG say they want to be price competitive with TN - $500 to $600 isn't price competitive, $400 would be. Other monitor manufacturers couldn't bring down prices that low, but since LG actually makes the screens, they can charge whatever they like.
If you search, you can find the "pixel perfect" monitors on ebay where the seller checks the monitors before shipping them to you to confirm no dead pixels. I got a the Achieva Shimian pixel perfect guaranteed monitor for 399 recently, and tagged on a 3 year square trade warranty for an extra 53 bucks.
All this said, the monitor is great. The stand is a little cheap, but this monitor has the mount holes on the back (75x75 or 100x100, I don't recall which) so you can get a nice aftermarket stand for it.
Keep in mind that some of these monitors do not have a board installed on them, so you need a dedicated video card with dual link dvi to work with them (a gtx 460 or HD 6850 for example).
My problem now is that I want to add a second GTX 680 to my setup and get two more of these monitors....I obviously will never be happy with my life.
was gonna buy when it dropped to this price
then i got impatient and bought a crossover 27led-p for 400 and glad i missed on the ultrasharp deal.
27", 2560x1440 ips goodness. no frozen pixels! sweeet... puts my other ultrasharp to shame :/
still a great deal
