I don't think anyone buying anything in the world is unaware that they can spend more on another product that will be "better" in some way. But it always perplexes me when people suggest that "you can get a much better ___ if you spend 2x-3x the money" as though it is a profound statement of knowledge that has finally been bestowed upon the masses.
I don't mean to be a jerk -- but I don't get the comparison to the BIC F-12. It's like saying, "Don't get a Kia for $15,000. You can get a BMW 3-series under 30 grand!". Either compare the $15,000 Kia to a $15,000 Hyundai or it's a useless comparison. I own the BIC F-12. It's a fantastic sub. But if I knew someone was looking for a $75 sub, I'd never bother suggesting one that costs more than another hundred bucks on top.
That said, I will say thanks for the people who will read your review of the SW-8 as that may help them make a decision.
On the note of the SW-8, in my humble opinion, it's a great choice in this price-range. When I went to Best Buy to listen to equipment seven or eight months ago, I was surprised at how decent the SW-8 sounded. If I were looking for a sub-$100 sub, I think this would be the one. I think it's a great deal when Newegg puts it on sale for $80. At $75, it's even better. If you're looking to fill a night club with deep bass, this sub won't do it. But if you have a small room and a tight budget, you could do a lot worse.
For home theater, get a 12" better!
This part is quality. Does it compete with my higher quality Polk setup? Hell no. Does it have any chance in Hell of displacing my Klipsch gear? Not on your life. Does it sound bad in any way, shape, or form? Not. At. All.
At least one of my children will be conceived with this sub running in the background --'nuff said.
You can manufacture very nice bookshelf speakers for $80 each, or even $80 a pair [amazon.com] that will satisfy the great majority of people. This is not true with subs. You have to put real money into heavy cabinets and woofer drivers, a decent amp, and crossover controls. This raises both manufacturing and shipping costs.
Point is, posters who say "this sub is great with my soundbar" are right, but posters who warn it is not going to satisfy many or most people as the sub in a true surround system are also right.
If you have a full surround system (like the popular Energy Take 5s, or Pioneer bookshelf series) you should consider spending more for something like the F12, or the Energy S10.3 New Egg has on sale for $190 this weekend. They are FAR better sounding and will be worth the difference for most people.
Slick and Good price!
