Do you think this would be good for a 5year old?

I ask these because i have a touchpad modded with Android, but cannot find a lot of kids games for them of any educational value. Just drawing and scribbling, and may want an item like this especially for car rides (P.S. The batman game would be an instant hit with my 4 1/2 year old for sure)

Many of the games have different difficulty levels. My daughter like to play the Dora and Princesses. She does the coloring pages and sometimes the nnumbers. But there are math problems and finding letters to finish words. For $30, it is probably worth it.

For anyone who does get one, there is a known problem with the SD card. If it ever looks like you are missing some games or songs that you put on the SD card, you have to open it up and reseat it. It tends to come loose. I haven't found a way to rig it yet so it doesn't. Not a big issue though.

Thanks. Only thing keeping me on the fence is the batteries,. may have to spring fo some rechargeable.

You can download all of the games for free (legally) for the Mac. You can extract the game files only and install them on your iXL from a WIndows-based PC. I installed a larger SD card and was able to install all 15 games. You will have to search the 'net for instructions. My 4.5 year old loves this device! Two issues though: If the unit gets dropped, the SD card comes out, so you have to jam a piece of cardboard net to the card to keep it tight and with constant use, the batteries last about one full day.

I got a pack of Eneloops just for this application. They work great and last a long time.

haha, i was right about to say that, i got all 15 games a long time ago for free off the fisher price website, someone posted direct links to the windows versions a while back

Any idea of the process to load these from a windows PC? (i am an IT admin so no need to be gentle, just want to see how much hassle i am in for)

well, i googled it back in november and it had direct links to zip files, which each contained a folder named something like DoraExplorer with some files in it, and all you had to do was move the folder into the IXL folder and then fire up the program and it was there, real easy

the program just has your games on the left, a big arrow, and your ixl on the right, so just click the arrow to transfer the games to your ixl

you will need a 1 or 2gb sd card, as the system itself only holds 3 or 4 games

also, kmart had the ixl a week or two ago for $22.50, not sure if that deal is still around or not

sounds similar to the leapfrog tAG way of loading books to the device.

and with the daily deal here on SD cards, should be a good buy!

i jumped on this. Knowing i dont need to pay for games is a huge bonus, and i needed a set of rechargeables anyway for a long time....now to wait for a good deal on eneloop perhaps?

"No need to do the torrents. There is a way to trick the PC software into thinking you have all the games. It will then download all the latest full versions for you. Has to do with a registry edit.

The Mac software links posted are required to install using a Mac. I assume it requires the actual disc before they are registered."
