Well, technically it's getting 8MB/s write, so it's well above its Class 4 Specification.

Try a different card? Maybe your card reader is limited to a max of 13MB/s (I've had a Dell that maxed out @ 10MB/s read/write!)

You probably won't be dealing with 1000MB file sizes, so try 5 x 50MB (if they had something like 5 x 10MB or 20MB, I'd suggest that, since you're using it to store mostly ~3-7MB songs and pics)
