Say I'm in the market for a new refrigerator or other large appliance. Consumer Reports professionally compares them under identical circumstances to help me determine which one is for me. Whereas pulling up different review sites and user experiences under varying conditions can make things much more difficult.

While I generally Google for reviews, there are times when CR can be much more useful.

You can easily find PDFs or a short summary of any CR issue you want to see. You don't buy a fridge every year...so it's pretty useless to get a subscription from them
