Main difference I see is that garmin is refurbished, but tomtom taked a little extra effort to get the $80 price.
Also I read some reviews on the Garmin on walmarts website, and some have reported Garmin not honoring the lifetime map updates on the refurbished item.
A couple things I like about the TomTom was that it had the capacitive screen with multitouch gestures and swiping. Also I really like the mount it has with the magnetic holder rather than the snap in type on the TomTom one's. I can't comment on the Garmin for these features.
Ultimately I guess it's up to personal preference.
My personal preference is that I would go through the extra effort for a new product, and I've had good experiences with TomTom in the past, so I'll stick with them.
#1, you can get lost with anything. #2 a cheap Tom Tom is cheap, so the budget versions don't show the power of the Go line. Anyone that has been in my car has said that My GPS beat their "fill in the brand".
With tom tom you should update monthly via the internet and you are fine. They have the best map system out there.
HOWEVER, there service can be frustrating.
1. No, the traffic is not ad-supported. It works well for major roads and highways, but isn't so hot inside cities.
2. I live in the DC area. I have never gotten lost with my TomTom (though it tends to think afternoon rush hour road restrictions are in effect at all times.) My Father visited up here with his Garmin. Where my TomTom tends to know which roads are most congested in town and automatically navigates me around them, his Garmin did not. What is a 30-minute trip for me from MD to VA became a 60-minute trip for him.
This new GPS with Lifetime Maps/Traffic, and voice direction that actually work, is more then worth it for me. I will just sell my Garmin to a friend or co worker for around $30
I elected standard shipping, who do Walmart typically use for shipping? (UPS, Fed Ex, USPS?)
The whole $30 rebate is icing on the cake, but why they make it so weird? Why not just cut us a check for $30, instead us buying gas, scanning receit.....or just send us a gas card instead?
