Every S95 and S100 thread there always seems to be people recommending subpar cameras as alternatives. Quite entertaining.

I got that camera and sold it, it did improve low light over s95, the focus at video is awful, there's motor noise, the gps is very slow to active. Worst was overheat issue, cause miss shot occasion. Invest little more to get m4/3 only slight higher price. I don't see S100 picture a lot better than my phone HTC one S except low light.

Sensor size is 1/1.7". Top end PS camera.

Obviously, S100 is not for you.

Great compact camera. I have the S90 and it's still going strong. I have been waiting for a real improvement in image quality in the compact space but I feel that with S95 and S100 it's just incremental. Looks like the next step is Micro-4/3rds cameras but they are still not as compact. Can't wait until Canon figures out a way to get Micro-4/3rds image quality in a compact sized camera.

The biggest break-through in this category is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 [dpreview.com], but it costs $650 [amazon.com].

For a true compact though, this camera is hard to beat. Sure the Fujifilm X10, Olympus XZ-1, Lumix LX-7 are also good, but those are not really compact cameras - size comparison with the S100:

Canon S90/95/100 line is the one you can take to the beach, to the club, to the restaurant, put it in a jeans pocket not care. There are way better cameras out there (Sony NEX-5/7, Olympus micro-4/3rds, Sony RX100), but none of them has the balance of size and image quality of the S-series or they tend to cost a lot more.

P.S. LOL@ people comparing iPhone and their smartphone pictures to an S100.

I believe aag was talking about the size of the pixels, not the camera itself. Larger pixels gives better dynamic range and resolution, e.g., good for indoor low light without using the flash. Sorry, I haven't checked the specs, I'm content with the previous model of this Canon camera. I pull out the Nikon D700, which is excellent for low light situations, for when I truly want professional results. But I usually have the Canon in my pocket to quickly capture unexpected and exciting moments. I'm a photography enthusiast.

It has larger range of optical zoom, not better optical zoom. Optics in the canon are better. MPs don't matter at this stage nearly as much as the pixel size. The larger the pixel, the better the signal to noise.

I was all ready to get this camera for the times i don't want to carry the t3i until the rx100 reviews started streaming in the last few weeks! Though that camera is double the cost.

It's crazy to think that the T3i body, 2 lenses, bag, kit, and photo quality printer was only $400 than this point and shoot.

For any amateurs/enthusiasts interested in lugging around a larger camera for amazing shots, I think the deal is still going.

Don't fret over the no shipping of this unless you HAVE to have it NOW. Great little camera, but I think by Black Friday or sooner, this will occasionally be in the $250 to $275 range, maybe lower. It's been out a while and Canon produces new, ever so slightly upgraded models almost as fast as rabbits produce new rabbits! You might buy a model that does 720 video, then months later, they go to an identical looking successor that shoots 1080, for example, or has a better view finder.

It's ABOUT time Canon put a grip strip on a heavy little camera like this. This is a fine camera, but so was the S95. I had that a day --Christmas Eve (remember when that one got down to $229 w/ free shipping on Amazon?) and I accidently dropped it with the lens out onto a tile floor and suddeny had toast on a stick, instead of a nice, working camera.

Not a good day, but Amazon was very, very good to me! I think you can return anything but your blood family relatives to Amazon....

Nikon and others have long put grip strips on most of their rather small, high end cameras. I prefer Canon overall and the strip might save a lot of cameras from being dropped, especially if you ask someone else to take a complete group photo of you and your party.

Nice camera, but I'd look and see if Canon's coming out with a successor to this, because I have a hunch they are (as always--and it's been close to a year now) and this will drop lower yet, and as supply is exhausted, then it will go back up, as there's always a few that break or lose their's and want that 'special' replacement and will pay the premium as they really liked/got used to it...

I fall for these new cameras, but to be honest, when it comes down to simply taking great PICTURES, I have some OLD cameras that kick ass and do as good as the new ones.Maybe they don't do 1080 video or 3D, but they take great pics in high or low light--their main job. It's odd that within a given model (same camera #) some are diamonds and some are quartz, but not truly 'defective' , but I have a few old diamonds for sure.

bought one 3 weeks ago, serial number #46xxx, had the lens error during my camp trip(true story), returned to amazon, in exchange for a cheaper nikon p310. I loved the s100 but don't think they fixed the issue completely.
