No. The S100 has a significantly bigger CMOS sensor, much faster f/2.0 lens, shoots RAW, has better light sensitivity, shoots over 5 times faster, has better image quality, and the list goes on.

Not that those Panasonics are bad cameras. I'm sure they're fine. It's just a different class. It's like comparing a Honda Civic to a BMW M3. Both are great cars. They're just designed for a different segment with different performance requirements and price points.

I agree. I had the old generation Panny and my wife had the older gen Canon (S95). The Panny took good pics but they were not as good as the S95. I ended up giving my Panny to my parents and took over the S95 from my wife because she got a different camera. Also, the UI on Canon is so much better than Panny.

For the price two of these, might as well get the Sony RX100, No 1 on Amazon's P&S best seller. With a CMOS 4 times of that in these (everything else being equal), RX100 picture quality makes you wonder why you need a s100 besides an iphone.

The next new selling pitch of camera is no longer the number of pixels, but how big a sensor it has, albeit RX100's pixels is almost twice as many s100's.

No in the same league as s100. s100 is selling its bigger sensor and faster aperture, these mean better low light ability, moving target and picture IQ.

Because these are consumer P&S camera and people who're not familiar with photography generally don't get why there is a need of this class of P&S.

I understand that. However, if I want one portable camera to do everything, I'd trade off a bit of barrel distortion for wider angle.

There are no P&S size mirrorless. The body maybe close, but once you put on a lenz, you're closer to small DSLR than you're to P&S.
RX100 is very nich camera that you will never x-shop with S100.

Yet the only thing that matters is pixel size. You can bin small pixels on a large sensor, but you still can't get rid of sampling noise.
If RX100 would have had 12 MP, it would have been a far better sensor.

which is exactly why RX100 is not about its 20 MP, it is the sensor size makes RX100 a much better camera than any P&S, including s100. The point is, the number of pixels in the current generation camera is plenty already. But your "less is better" is arguable but that's a different discuss.

What x-shop? does it matter to how you snap a shot? Spent $300 for s100 but leave it in closet all the time to only carry an iphone? That's not a cost effective way of living.

how many of you guys have bought the rx-100 already? how do you like it so far? any issues that you don't like about it? i'm gonna wait till x-mas to get one hoping the price will drop $100 at least
